Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean--
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down--
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
The Duck by Harlequinn Bell
One morning on my way to work beneath the pouring rain
I saw a little Mallard duck waiting for the train
He didnâ...Expand for more
t have a briefcase, umbrella or a coat,
Just a tiny feathered collar on his shiny emerald throat.
With his black and beady eyes, he looked across the track
While tiny drops of morning rain were falling on his back.
He stood their waiting patiently with the rest of the commuters,
With their newspapers and lunches and their black laptop computers.
Though he looked a bit like all the working people in that mob,
Who of you has ever known a duck that had a job?
I then began to wonder just what work a duck could do
Where he would need to take a train the way that people do?
Thereâs lots of things he couldnât do just being two feet tall,
Like working at the ice cream stand down at the local mall!
With his tiny ducky legs, he couldnât drive a car,
And Iâm pretty sure he couldnât kick a football very far.
He couldnât be a lifeguard even though he sure can swim,
If someone were in trouble, heâd need hands to rescue them!
He couldnât build a building with his little ducky wing,
And with his quacking ducky voice, he probably canât sing.
With his puffy feather body perched atop his webby feet,
Heâd look pretty funny when he wobbled down the street!
When you give a thought or two, although its sad to say,
Thereâs not much work a duck can do within a working day.
I think the ducky heard my thought, for in something like despair,
He quacked a sigh and flapped his wings and took off through the air.
And as I watched him disappear into the rainy sky,
I thought âHe wishes he could ride a train and I wish I could flyâ¦â".
