King's Story
King Calvert Marked Tree High School class of 1969. I grew up as part of what I will always refer to as that "Special Time" the period before the one school system of today. At the age of six going on seven because of the split school system and the fact that my birthdate was May 5, I had to start school a year later than most my age.
I Began grade school at Birdsong Arkansas where after only two months I was promoted ahead to the second grade thus catching up with my rightfull classmates. I attended public school grades three (3) through seven (7) at what was called the "Tyronza Consolidated School" system (ms Emma Campbell Principal).
When fair and equal finally began to mean what the words said, 1965 the schools in Tyronza were unified. All the Tyronza students grades twelve and under were now in the same school.
We will always cheerish the merories of what we refer to as the "Old School at Cherry Bean", "Spear Lake", "Cherry Bean Church" and of course "Tyronza Consolidated School".
My parents moved to Marked Tree during my junior year and I followed in the summer of 1968. That is why I consider myself a member of the class of 1969 Marked Tree High School (where I graduated) and Tyronza High School (where I grew up)
I volunteered for the United state Navy on the buddy system with childhood classmate Clarence Thomas Tyronza High School class of 1969 due to a medical condition I let my buddy down. Discharged and seeking direction I chose to persue a vocation where I could use my mind and get away from that factory mentality(where you do the same thing over and over and over).
Completed vocational training Delta Votech as a Major Appliance Repair Technician, moved to M...Expand for more
emphis and began employment in related area.
1974 while setting in Southland Mall on a Saturday checking out the babes encountered Robert Watson(my vocational instructor)and he informed me of a job opening in Jonesborro AR. Applied and began work with thge Disadvantaged and Handicapped at Abilities Unlimited a shelter workshop.
1976 learned of an opening for a vocational instructor in Forrest City, AR at Crowley's Ridge Votech School teaching adults to work in the Appliance and Refrigeration Heating & Air Conditioning field. Employment began June 1976 through current, and had someome said that I would be doing this type of work and for this long we would still be fighting.
I enjoy helping individuals turn their lives arround and it is an enormous high when former students return to say how well he or she is doing and how much money they make. My title is that of Vocational Instructor Major Appliance Service but I learned very early on that you can't teach adults a darn thing.
You can help those that are willing to learn excel and that is what drives me daily. I work very hard at Helping those I come in contact with learn and that is why I consider myself as just someone who Helps others to learn.
I am sinle and have four children (two boys and two girls) and six grand children(and counting). Life is great God has been good to me and I am trying daily to figure out what greater purpose he is keeping me here for. Each day I give thanks and look for opportunities to do more for my fellow man.
Would like to here from as many of my former classmets as possible. The Carver Reunion is the perfect venue for those of us who share that Special bond of public school prior to 1967.
