Kitty's Story
College
As for college...
I boarded a plane for college shortly after graduation with the goal of getting as far away from my hometown as possible without getting too homesick. Not such an easy task, but I was up for a challenge. I touched down in the small mountain community of Flagstaff, Arizona, just 2 hours south of the Grand Canyon, and 20 minutes west(?) of the Sno-Bowl ski resort. It is also the home of NAU (Northern Arizona University).
You know, except for the canyon, I might as well have still been in Upstate New York. Flagstaff reminded me so much of Lake Placid, it was almost impossible to miss home. God Bless Serendipity!
Anyway,I spent the next 4 1/2 years (excluding trips home for the summer and Christmas) studying Psychology, Sociology & English Literature. I also became very well versed in things like: 2for1(at Senor Frog's), Ladies Night(at O'Shanigan's), F.U.B.A.R. (at Granny's Closet), Dominoes Pizza, frozen Magaritas (at El Chilito), Taco Bell and free tickets to the football game.
I also made some great friends, a small number of whom I've been lucky enough to keep in touch with all these years...including my first room-mate who has been one of my best friends ever since.
After a few years of silliness, I managed to get most of my ducks in a row, at least long enough to get a job as an RA in Reilly Hall, which at the the time was an "all-girls" dorms (Oh! OOPS! I mean...Residence Halls). That was a trip! My co-RA was a great gal...Expand for more
named Monica and we had to deal with 78 Freshmen (per floor) who had just discovered 2for1, Ladies Night, Dominoes Pizza and football PLAYERS. After growing up in a boarding house back home, I figured "how hard can this be?"
Whoo-man! Did those girls keep me on my toes!If it were not for all the other(sane)terrific people I worked with I might very well have become the "Den Mother From Hell"... actually, I think there are still a few girls out there who swear to God that I already was (I heard they burned me in effigy and smashed bottles of California Coolers, but that might just have been rumor.)
Seriously, though, I met an awful lot of great people through that job... coworkers, university staff and residents alike. There are enough stories there to last us all a lifetime... or so I've been told. Personally, I plead the fifth.
Anyway, after a year and a half of that job, the University and I had both had enough of each other and I boarded yet another plane, and went home.
I arrived home from college in 1988 with that "What do I do now?" feeling...(strangely, all these years later I sometimes still wake up feeling the same way...HHmmm) Kind of ironic that I ended up back in my home town, after being so determined to get as far away
as possible... but the truth is, I like it here.
I still keep in touch with some of my great friends from college and being back home has given me a terrific opportunity to follow up on old friends from high school as well.
