Klaus's Story
Life
When one holds a grandchild in their arms for the first time, it seems like a kind of fulfillment you can't experience elsewhere. There are some other kinds of fulfillment some of us may share. Seeing your own children born, buying your first house, car and other rites of passage. Teaching both of my children to drive was awesome, each in their own way. I've worked in a school where children wanted you to come back for their graduation and party. Graduating high school and college were both wonderful, yet seeing someone coming to faith in a personal savior, seeing that happen before your very eyes is an incredible once which defies description. It demonstrates that it takes a lot of living to be fully equipped to reach and teach another.
School
Communication seriously was my strongest skill in school. Performing was as strong a talent as communication. In our senior year I was responsible for circulation of the HIGHLANDER, I was on the speech team, I was involved in political activities and other cultural activites. Though I may not have brought glory to "DOUGLAS" during our time there, it still may happen. there is always hope. My current activities are leading in that direction.
College
For seven years between '74 and '80, I worked full time for Portland State U and a food service company, at the same time I took part-time schooling. My Bachelor of Science degree is comprised of work in Psychology, Economics, plus the usual requisite of addtl social sciences to complete departmental requirements. In addition I took 45 hours of Business related courses (originally going for a Bus Ad degree) and some music courses. One thing one learns in college is to resource and be resourceful. I balanced work, family and college all those years. Two ...Expand for more
children were born durikng that period of time, plus we moved three times.
Workplace
My work experience can be summarized in one word, diversity. I've driven an Ice cream scooter, a taxi, a van as well as other assorted vehicles in a 30 year history. I've worked for several branches of govt from local to federal. I've worked as a cook in a buffet restaurant, a youth shelter and in deli. I have worked on coffee, juice and hot choclate machines in hospitals, schools, nursing homes and restaunts. I've also worked on mashed potato machines, hot dog and popcorn machines, chemcial dispensers and other food service related equipment. My greatest tasks, though, have been in social services. I have worked with those afflicted with autism, as well as others challenged mentally. I have had social service experience in schools, residential treatment and administrative locations. These are just the highlights of my work life spanning 30 years.
Military
One year following our graduation, I entered the Navy. During my "hitch" I served on two ships and saw quite a bit of the worlds' geography, and not all from a porthole. After boot camp and school I went to PSNS and served on board CANOPUS, which took us to Scotland via Acapulco, Panama, Gitmo, and Charleston. CANOPUS served our ssbn forces in the North Atlantic. Because I got qualified to work as a Journalist, I went to USS INTREPID, which is now in New York harbor. To summarize, we took both a NATO ruise and a Med cruise, crossing back to Quonset Pt RI. It was my privelege while onboard to participate in a strong chapel program. We had retreats in both Malaga and near Corinth. Our chaplain was B. Hathaway Struthers, who was a bible professor and translator of the Modern Language Bible. There's more to tell.
