Kris's Story
Life
Well I have three boys now, Tim (11/13/04), Matt (04/16/08), and Nick (04/20/10). My long-term friend, Sarrah, is the godmother of the older two and will hopefully be the gomother for Nick as well once I make it back to MO.
I've been married to Steve Becker of St. Charles, MO since 6/21/03 (met him while I was attending UMR). Thank you workstudy...had me working in a department completely different from my own that found me great friends that then found my husband for me.
Since high school I've lived in Rolla, MO (8/96-8/03), Blacksburg, VA (8/03-7/07), Austin, TX (7/07-12/08), and now Houston, TX (12/08-present). We are hoping to move to Katy, TX soon- pretty much a Houston burb. In a couple years I'll be able to say I've lived in TX most of my life which will be nice because I have never considered myself to be from MO. Something about being in Abilene, TX from the ages of 7-12 yrs always made me feel like a Texan even if most of that time was spent on a military base.
For thos that are curious: Prior to high school I live in Washington D.C. (birth-summer '83), Brackley and Croughton RAF, England (summer '83- spring '86), and Abilene and Dyess, TX (spring '86- summer '91). Then came the move to Wright City, MO.
School
I think most school prior to college stinks, particularly in small towns. But I always did well even though I never actually tried and really couldn't stand a majority of the people around me...probably a side effect of having shyness(sp) interpreted as stand-offishness, that and my off sense of humor.
College
UMR was great...taught the intro level mechanical engineering lab (metal shop) for a few years, met my husband, made a lot of friends that like me just how I am with out any need to act...it's amazing re...Expand for more
ally, there were very few people that I spent more than a couple hours with that weren't good friends, so either I got more likeable(sp) with age or not caring if people like you helps quite a bit.
Anyways, graduated magna cumlate...however it's spelled and that means that I got better than a 3.5/4.0 GPA and that was after I completely bombed my first year at UMR....go figure, I didn't know how to study...now how did I get out of high school with straight A's and not know how to study? oh wait I know but I'm not telling.
After completing my BS in Mech Eng and minor in Comp Sci I started a Math degree with an education emphasis. Got 1 year into that when I married and then moved so that my husband could get his PhD in Geology at Virginia Tech. I started my Masters of Art in Education with an emphasis in Secondary Math in August 06. Ran into a few obstacles there...after one year I only had three more classes to take for the masters to be complete but I was missing a lot of undergrad math credits (for licensure) that the school wouldn't let me sign up for because I was not a math student. But that is okay because we moved and I am now trying to figure out the best course of action to get me to my goal of teaching high school math.
Workplace
I've had several jobs at this point:
Wal-mart part-time too many times to count (MO&VA)
Substitute teacher (VA)
Long-term Substitute teacher (VA)
Computer System Designer/Tester (VA)
Special Education Aide/ Inclusion Assistant (VA&TX)
At home Mom (TX)
Military
I have never been in the military and will never be in the military, having been raised that way I know that I would not enjoy it. and no, I am not dissing those who are in the military, I respect those who are I just couldn't do it myself.
