Krista's Story

Life I must be the biggest geek for filling out everything on this website! Let's see... I'm living in southwestern PA, married (3/03) to a labor historian. Lou & I have no kids and don't make much money, but (as John Prine sez) ain't we got love! I opened my own law office in 2003, but I lost the taste for law. Right now, I'm working as a land agent for the USA's 3rd largest developer of natural gas. It's the best job I've ever had, and being in SW PA right now is really exciting, since it's like a gold rush. My husband just got a teaching potition at a college in Pittsburgh. Thank goodness we are staying in the area. I mean, I like to travel and all that, but it's good to have a home, and who cares if I have to drive 40min almost to get to the grocery store? I just want more land for more chickens, more space in the garden, some solar panels, more clean soil to dirty my pretty feet in. I am raising pet chickens in our backyard to augment our garden. I'm actually crazy about those pet chickens - maybe this is what happens when you can't have kids. I show the occasional chicken competitively, (yes, just like dogs, people show chickens!!), and at the Spring Show in Uniontown, my Buff Orpington Cock won Best of Class (English Fowl). Of course, he was the only English breed of fowl in that particular show. He was a shoe-in. I'm still into art, writing and music: playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle and bass guitar. I don't write as much as I used to, but I keep an idea list going. I used to be super busy and super ambitious. I stopped getting up at 5am when my brain chemistry went the other way. Turns out I'm bipolar - Bipolar II, to be precise. Sounds like some sequel that's not worth your $6.50, and at which your date will not hold your hand. Maybe it's the kind of sequel you have to sit through by yourself, at a matinee, to make it worth your while. Digging a little into my family history, I was not surprised...Expand for more
to find some serious mental illness. I had a great aunt who saw my dead grampa and her old 3-legged dog dancing with the devil... my grandma tried to kill herself and the last time I stayed at her place she had these weird eyes cut from magazines pinned to her curtains in her bedroom... all of this could have clued me in to the family tree bearing some strange fruit. But I figure it's not much different from diabetes - every day I have to take meds so my body chemistry (brain instead of pancreas) doesn't get out of whack. Big deal. Only difference I think is that it's hard to call in sick b/c you're depressed, or strung out b/c your brain is telling you it doesn't need sleep. Once you get the meds right, if it wasn't for the darned stigma of mental illness, it's really not so bad. There is even a link between creative genius and bipolar (so I am told). Losing my mom to endometrial cancer changed a lot of things. I spend more time enjoying life now and less time worrying about dinky stuff. It's sad that I lost her when we were just starting to really get to know each other and bond. Well, that's life, I suppose. If everything worked out the way we expected it to, we'd be bored to tears. All the best things in life come unexpected, and even regrets have some value. I have recently acquired a most unusual pet, a European Starling (Sternus vulgaris). My friend found it outside his condo, and it was a nestling, naked and cold. I warmed it up, fed it, and now it has bonded to me. I wasn't that thrilled with it until I found out that they can be taught to talk, can mimic songbirds, and make pretty good pets. I was surprised that there is a whole internet world out there of Pet Starling Owners, and now I am one of them. I love discovering hidden worlds like that. Anyone who remembers me from the haze of high school, college, or elsewhere is welcome to contact me. My preemptive apologies if I do not remember you.
