Kristie's Story

Life I traveled to Baghdad, Iraq in 2004 to produce a documentary titled "Nice Bombs" about my husband's return to his birthplace after 24 years of exile. The movie recently received a grant from the Playboy Foundation, and another from the Creative Capital Foundation, and will be completed by autumn of 2005. I finished my first feature film in Chicago (as writer/director/editor), titled Other People's Mirrors. It premiered at the Gene Siskel Film Center in September 2004. I've written a second narrative feature and have begun pre-production on a new documentary. I had a son at 19, got married, got divorced (that quickly), got a Bachelor's degree in Photogrpahy/Video at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1999, graduating third in my class, and got a full scholarship to the graduate program in Film at the Art Institute of Chicago. I recieved my Master's Degree in 2001. I won the Princess Grace Award for my short films, and have had my work shown at Lincoln Center in NYC (where I was also awarded a...Expand for more
fellowship) as well as around the world. A major program of my work in video and film was shown in London in December 2001. I studied at Francis Ford Coppola's Writers' Workshop in Central America. I've participated in radio shows throughout France and Austria. I've curated a few film festivals, and am now Program Director for the Z Film Festival and the 72 Hour Feature Project. I'm now married, living with my husband and fellow filmmaker Usama Alshaibi in our loft in the West Loop arts district of Chicago. We own our own production company. I also design websites and do live performance art, and ocassionally model for print publications and do runway shows. I also write for magazines. My future plans include attending the PhD program at EGS in Switzerland, beginning in 2006, and spending some time travelling to Beirut and across Europe throughout the latter half of 2005. As a child, I was a really quiet, painfully shy girl. I am still quiet, though I've learned to be a bit less inhibited.
