Kristin's Story
Life
I grew up in a small town in Ohio in the 1950s/60s, the best of times. As a girl I enjoyed riding horses, swimming, and playing hide-and-go-seek in the summer, sledding and ice-skating in the park in the winter. As teenagers we ate at Don's famous hamburgers after school and cruised Main Street and Shively's Drive-In in the evenings, and roller skating and riding the rides at Sandy Beach Park at Indian Lake.. I've had great times with interesting people and few regrets.
School
School was hard in the 1950s and early 60s. No frills and no excuses! The most fun I had was being a majorette in the highschool band.
College
A big transition during my college years from the kind of protected girls school atmosphere at St. Mary's College in Raleigh, NC to the Vietnam/social change era at Ohio State in the late 1960s. I was an art major and in a sorority. Two different lifestyles. I was preppy hippy!
Workplace
I lived and worked in several different states. After college graduation, I went back to NC to Wrightsville Beach to live at the Summer Sands (old Kitty Cottage) for one beauti...Expand for more
ful and fun endless summer, working at the Blockade Runner Hotel. Then to Ohio to teach grade school for a couple of years and back to NC just in time for the Wilmington 10 riots as schools were desegregating in the south in '70-'71. I was a Yankee in the wrong place at the wrong time. I moved west to Boulder, Colorado at the foot of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. I then moved on to sunny Miami, Florida, working for, among various lawyers and doctors, the team physician of the Miami Dolphins. I met Coach Don Shula, Bob Griese & others of the championship 1972 team along with Larry King, who was a local sports announcer, and Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes. I met my husband in Miami and we subsequently moved to Raleigh, NC where I taught art in the public schools until my retirement in 2002. I separated from my husband and went back to live at Pirate's Cove at Indian Lake (Russells Point, OH) for a few years where I enjoyed catching up with old friends, making new and learning history about my family and Logan County. Single for a few years, I have returned to Raleigh, NC to be near family.
