Kristin's Story

Life I moved to Porterville when I was two years old, and lived there until I left for college. I went to Burton Elementary School for Kindergarten and had Mrs. Firomenti (sp?). I went to St. Anne's Catholic school from 1st through 4th grade and then to Belleview for 5th and 6th grade. I went to Bartlett Junior High and then onto Monache. I graduated in '96 and went straight to UC Davis in Northern California. In 2000, I graduated with a B.S. in Community Development and Public Health, and went to live with my family in Paso Robles (see below). I worked random jobs and then moved back up to Davis, California and got a job with the California Dept. of Heatlh Services, working in Tobacco Control research for the state. From there I went to the American Lung Association and other random non-profit jobs. I got my teaching credential and am now a 1st grade teacher (just like my mom). child. I have a lot of good memories growing up and living in Porterville, although I left it with bad feelings. My dad was diagnosed with cancer in '99 and my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer in early 2000. Both moved from Portervile to Paso Robles, California in 2000 to be closer to family. Dad's cancer is in remission, Mom died in 2001 after suffering for over a year. I haven't been back to Porterville since her funeral in June 2001. I feel guilty/bad/sad/disconnected because I'd like to go back and see how things have changed/stayed the same, and I'd like to contact old friends/school buddies, but the area, and even the schools hold a lot of very strong memories and deep emotions for me. Even though it was 4 years ago, I can't seem to let it go. I don't even know how I would feel looking at the house I grew up in. I was looking forward to going back this year with my husband for our 10 year reunion. Does anyone know if we're having one??
