Kristin's Story
Life
After graduating from Carbondale High School (I was only there for my senior year), I went to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. I graduated in 1992 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Then I moved to Chicago and lived there for 5 years. I worked for Motorola most of those years, lived downtown, met a lot of great friends, and dated a lot.
In 1997, I moved to Annapolis, MD. Motorola had a job out there for me and I wanted to get back to the east coast. I spend most of my high school years at Woodbridge High School. My parents lived in northern Virginia still, as well as, my brother and sister. It was a good move for me.
I got into Sailing. I started sailboat racing in the Chesapeake every Wednesday night in the spring, summer and fall. I met my future husband during this racing, Jordan Smith. He was living on an old Contessa 26 -- a 26' sailboat that Tonya Aebi sailed around the world when she was 18.
We set sail on this Contessa in 2000 and sailed down the east coast to the Keys and then over to the Bahamas. The entire trip was about 8 months. It was freedom and we got engaged. We decided to live in Ft. Lauderdale. We sold the Contessa and b...Expand for more
ought a C&C Crusader 40 from Jordan's parents -- a 40' racer/cruiser. We lived on it for a year in Ft. Lauderdale. Then we decided to sail back to Maryland.
We continued to live on the boat until we bought a house in Edgewater, MD in 2003. It's a great little old house (a 1940 Cape Cod) that we fixed up a little. But now we decided to move out of it. During this time we had a baby girl who we named Ingrid. She is hilarious -- great personality -- and, so far, loves to sail. In May 2005, we took her to the Caribbena with us to test sail an 53' steel ketch named "Atlantis." I got seasick one of the days, as we got 40 knot winds! She was fine the entire time -- must have Jordan's blood. We decided to buy her.
Jordan is in the Caribbean right now (July 2005) to sail our newest boat -- a 53' steel ketch "Atlantis". We will move onto it when he returns. Then the plan is to keep working in Maryland for a couple of years. We've rented our Edgewater house. We will save, save, save, and then good-bye Maryland.
We'd like to sail the Caribbean at first, but then start the trip around the world. We will home school Ingrid and, I hope, have one more kid.
