Kyle's Story
School/work-wise, I graduated Harrison High School and attended Indiana University with dismal results and transferred to Purdue University where I finished my BS in wildlife science in 1992. While at Purdue, I got a job working for the university in the State Seed Lab which eventually turned into full-time employment. I accepted a field assistant position in Venezuela studying birds and lived and worked there for 6 months in 1991, afterwards returning to my job at Purdue. While working for Purdue I opted to start taking coursework on a BA in spanish which I completed in 2000. I left employment at Purdue in 1999 and began trying to obtain work more in line with my wildlife degree. First working for Indiana DNR, then the Purdue entomology department and then again for IDNR and then the Indianapolis Zoo. I was then offered a directorship for the New York State Seed Testing Laboratory at Cornell University and I couldn't say no, so here I am. After a year up here, I began working on an MS in crop science at Cornell. I should have that completed by 2011.
Life-wise, I met my spouse, Susanna, in 1978 (8th grade) but we didn't start dating until 1984 and were married in 1986. She grew up in Connersville, IN. We are fond of travel and began our international forays in 1989 to Mexico. Our subsequent big trips included Venezuela (May-Oct 1991), Costa Rica (me only, Mar 1993), Alaska (June 1995), Argentina-Falkland Islands-Antarctic Peninsula (Jan, 1999), Brazil (me only, Sep 1999), Ta...Expand for more
nzania-Kenya (me only, Feb 2001), Belize (her only, June 2001), Svalbard Archipelago, Norway (Aug 2001), Chile (Nov 2001), Australia-Antarctica-New Zealand (Dec 2001-Feb 2002). We have one child, Ross, born in 2002. Our international travels came to a halt but he is now old enough that we hope to start up again soon. We took him into Canada last summer. Susanna worked for the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources for 16 years and has become a stay-at-home mom since we moved to New York. We currently have one cat who adopted us last summer that Ross named "Tiger".
Besides having my son, some life experiences I have enjoyed are:
Getting to within 800 miles of the north pole and 700 miles of the south pole in the same year.
I have held an Amur Tiger (zoo), Kodiak Bear (zoo), various lemurs (zoo), African Elephant (zoo), Orinoco Crocodile (captive breeding), Anaconda (wild), Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (wild), Gila Monster (wild) among many other animals.
So far, I have seen over 2200 species of birds in the world.
I stood on frozen sea ice in McMurdo Sound and swam in Antarctic waters, Deception Island.
I was stranded with 24 others for 12 hours on South Georgia Island in 110 mph winds.
I know what Humpback Whale breath smells like.
The longest continuous distance I have run is 8 miles.
The strangest food I have eaten is giant barnacles in Chile.
I have seen all but four species of penguins in the wild.
The highest altitude I have achieved is around 15,000 feet (the Andes).
