Kylie's Story

Life I am now a social worker for the Jefferson County Department of Human Resources. I am in a foster care/permanency unit. Basically, that means I manage foster care cases of children 0 - 13 years old. I am the person in my unit that gets the cases after the parents have either disappeared or have not followed the court orders which leads to us terminating parental rights. It's not an easy thing to do, but I get the happy end of it because I follow through with the adoption of these children. People ask all the time, "how do you do it?" Simple, I love these kids. I live in a house with Jalon Alexander. I plan on staying here for another 6 months - 1 year and then I will either buy a house here or buy a house and move back to Boaz. Either way, I plan to stay with DHR. I also plan to go back to school and get my masters degree in the near future. I had completed 5 semesters of law school, but decided that my true calling has always been to be a social worker. Want to know more.....email me. School It's hard to believe that it has been so long since high school. I guess we all learned a lot while we were there, but I wouldn't do it again if I had to. I miss some of the friends that I have lost touch with, but still see some of them on a regular basis. I miss high school football and basketball games, and I really miss not having to pay bills and be totally responsible at all times. We had good times......Expand for more
..but I guess everyone has to grow up and move on at some point. College I began school at Jacksonville State University in the Fall of 1997. I graduated with my bachelor of social work degree in April 2002. I can honestly say, most of my best memories are from my time in Jacksonville. I met some really great people there....some are my best friends today. Believe it or not, I actually learned a few things while I was there as well. Now, I am a social worker in the Birmingham area. When I finished college, I moved to South Alabama for a year and worked for the Houston County Department of Human Resources.....the people down there were a little different so I moved to Birmingham. I tried some other areas of social work when I moved to Birmingham, but now I have returned to DHR and child welfare because that is where I want to be. I love the children I work with. I attended Birmingham School of Law for 5 semesters, but recently realized that I was miserable and that I am truly meant to be a social worker. Now, I plan on attending UA to get my masters degree in the next year or two. Workplace Currently, I am employed with the Jefferson County Department of Human Resources. I am a foster care worker and I do adoptions. I also have experience in Geriatric Social Work, Home Health, and Hospital Social Work. It was nice to try other areas of my profession, but my heart is with the children that I work with.
