L. V.'s Story

Life Well, how to say it all in under 4000 characters... Married 20 years to Roxanne; three kids, Katie, 16 Amanda 9 and Ben 7. After Chanute AFB closed and cashed in my chips with my music store - Insight II Music, I went to work for Vesuvius USA. We supply advanced ceramic refractory to the liquid steel industry. Have been with them since 1994 and moved to the corporate offices in Champaign IL in 2001. Still actively playing music - leading the Contemporary Celebration Services at First Baptist Church on Glenwood in Rantoul IL every Sunday with the band "For His Glory". No travel with the band at this point. That might happen but only if we get that call. After years of traveling and playing all over the country, it's very nice to not have to spend all of my time on the highways and byways. Kids are of an age that it's good to be here for them. I know that the time that we spent in high school mattered as that was the time we became the adults we are today. Wished I'd had time to go to the 25-year reunion. Not a good time due to other commitments and all. Hope that anyone who remembers the 'joyful noise' we made during lunch hour in the band room would give me a shout. Would like to reconnect with some of that old gang. My oldest daughter Katie, is one of the four vocalists we have in the Glory band and I'm very proud of her. She wants to attend one of the East Coast Ivy League, but I'd love to have her go to the U of I (I could keep my vocalist). My youngest is in the Cub Scouts and has his dad for a Den leader. With all of that and doing council time for the church's AWANA program I stay about as busy as ever. Would love to hear from anyone who attended OTHS and is now active in ministry work. I know that Chris K. had put out an album as I've traded emails with him for a while. Anyone else get the call? Drop me a line! Workplace Started out after school doing what I knew - working and playing music. Moved up to the Chambana area in the late Seventies for about two years and then to Alabama as I heard that my father - who I'd not seen in 16 years - was living there. I finally got in touch with him through some family members and after a pretty rough start, we are now at least friends. I know that sounds strange, but from what I've seen in others relationships, I have a better one than most. What does that have to do with work? Well, because of my desire to find him I took about any job I could at the time. Made pizza's (for a day!) cut grass at an gas/oil terminal, worked as a delivery truck driver for a chemical plant (there's a reason that caustic is called that!) then decided after seeing someone's flesh eaten away, that I should look for a little safer field. I then started work for a large furniture store in Irondale, AL and worked my way up to warehouse manager after a few years. When that company folded in the '82 recession, I went on the road...Expand for more
and ended up travelling across the southern tier of states on out to Cali. Spent a few months there and got _real_ tired of all the wannabes and posers. Heard every line that I could imagine as to why the person hadn't made it just yet. Way to many crazies. I decided that the heartland was where I should be. Called a friend from a band I'd worked with in Champaign County and he agreed to let me crash at his house here in Rantoul. Stayed with him until I got steady work (thanks again, Dale!). The day gig ended up being at a pizza shop making pizza's at Papa Del's - they still have their store on campus in Champaign and make the best deep dish pizza in this part of the country. While working at Pop's, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of a lovely young girl who took my breath away. I asked her out, she said yes! After about a year, I asked her to marry me, she said yes! Twenty years later, I'd ask her all over again ;-) After seeing how the work/dating thing messed up one's chances at advancement, for her sake I took a gig as a night auditor at the local Holiday Inn Sunday through Monday (did I mention that I worked as bellhop while I was in Alabama?). I continued to work with various secular music groups here and there. I started to get burnt out from the extreme hours that that job required and then playing till closing time on the weekends. As there are loads of great musical talent in this area pay was not that great - made better in Cali!. I ended up going back to church with my new bride. It didn't take long for the spirit to grab my by the shirttails and let me know that He had other plans for me. I started teaching guitar. I started my music store as a lesson studio in the extra bedroom of our home in Rantoul. The only problem was that the place got way too small when I found out that Roxanne was expecting our first child. My storage room for my gear was to be the nursery :) I was working at a store in Champaign giving lessons and helping them out on the floor setting up displays and demoing gear for the college students. I found a small store front in Rantoul to move the lesson studio into and they gave me a small amount of consignment goods to see if it would be worth their while to have another branch here as well in Champaign. After a while, I decided that I would prefer not to have someone looking over my shoulder so I severed ties with them. I survived in this area for another 5 years, but after it was announced that Chanute AFB was going to close, the local banks went through a consolidation phase (can you say receivership?). It so happened that a bank that only wanted to clean up - not help (ouch) bought out the one where I'd done the most of my business!. Many others were affected in the same way, but this was what led me to submit an application to Vesuvius. 10+ years later, I now have three kids, still work for them and play music every week.
