Lakola's Story

Life After high school, I went on to college and completed a degree program in social work. I started out Poli Sci but wasn't really getting anywhere with it. I graduated with several honors including Cum Laude. I am looking forward to continuing my education in the very near future. My Spouse I met my spouse at church before I graduated from high school. His cousin was the pastor of my church and he was visiting him from North Carolina. We became friends very quickly, and before we knew it, we were dating. In June of 2000, we were married. I am extremely happy and look forward to us spending the rest of our lives together. My husband is everything most men claim to be without even trying. I can't wait until you all meet him! My Job My job was really challenging in the beginning because I was not really confident that I could do everything required of me. And it just appeared to be so serious, peoples lives were at stake. I was more familiar with the resources thanks to my previous position. Despite these factors, I took on the challenge and I thoroughly enjoy it. I enjoy the people and the interaction with them. Although I enjoy what I do, I don't think I will be here very long. My goal for the next two years is to begin work with an alternatives program at the local middle or high school. A new challenge is what I am really after. Workplac...Expand for more
e AFTER GRADUATION, I MOVED TO NORTH CAROLINA WHERE I FIRST BECAME AN HIV/AIDS CASE MANAGER. I REALLY ENJOYED THE ONE TO ONE TIME WITH SOME OF THE CLIENTS ON MY CASELOAD. I ENJOYED HELPING THEM AND FELT LIKE I WAS DOING SOMETHING WORTHWHILE. THEIR PAYMENT SYSTEM SUCKED SO I HAD TO LEAVE. I CAN'T HELP ANYONE ELSE WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO HELP MYSELF. I THEN DID COMMUNITY SERVICE AND RESTITUTION ON THE JUVENILE LEVEL. THE CONCEPT OF THE PROGRAM WAS REALLY GOOD. THE ONLY THING WAS THAT THERE WASN'T ENOUGH TO DO. AGAIN I SWITCHED, THIS TIME, WORKING FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. I FIRST WORKED IN INTAKE AND CRISIS. I LIKED THIS BUT IT DID NOT GIVE THE SAME REWARD THAT WORKING WITH CLIENTS ON A LONG TERM BASIS DID. AT THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT, I APPLIED TO THE FOSTER CARE UNIT. I THOROUGHLY ENJOY IT. IT CAN BE STRESSING MOST OF THE TIME AND THE HOURS ARE LONG, HOWEVER THE REWARDS OUTWEIGH THE SACRIFICE. SINCE i HAVE STARTED A FAMILY, I HAD TO CHANGE JOBS YET AGAIN. i AM NOW PROVIDING CASE MANAGEMENT TO CHILDREN WHO ARE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED OR AT RISK OF BEING DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED. I REALLY LIKE WHAT I DO. IT IS JUST AS REWARDING AS MY OTHER CASE MANAGEMENT POSITIONS. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I CAN FOCUS ON WHAT'S IMPORTANT IN MY LIFE, MY HUSBAND AND DAUGHTER. THE NEXT MOVE I MAKE WILL BE AT HOME. WE'LL SEE HOW IT UNFOLDS!!!!
