Lanette's Story

I grew up on Mountain Avenue. My father was on the parade committee for our township and my family owned a private horse boarding stables called, "Mountain Shadow Stables," and a tack shop. After one bad marriage, I met my current husband of 21 years and left the restaurant management business to pursue a bachelor's degree in both English/Creative Writing & Women Studies along with a minor degree in Environmental Science at the University of Toledo where I remain at the top percent of my class and live close by. I enjoy research projects pertaining to women's issues, writing about almost anything:) and presenting my work and poetry at public and school related events. Unfortunately, I don't have many fond memories of my school days in New Jersey. When I moved to Pompton Plains from the township of Riverdale, (which I miss so much) at the start of sixth grade, I was shy. A lot of kids at our school were pretty stuck up, especially the "Jocks," who tried to act and dress the same and held too high opinions of themselves. I hope their children never suffer at the hands of bullies like their parents. (You guys know who you are without mentioning names) I hope you have matured into more respectful individuals, but never forget the ones you tortured at recess, on the bus and in classrooms. Mr. Cusimano was the worst teacher I ever had the displeasure of learning from. Like I said, there were a lot of mean girls (bullies) to contend with if you were the new kid in town. ad it pretty rough because the most popular girl at school's boyfriend broke up with her to pursue me after attending school the first week. Christine Webster and Pam Kester (who became pregnant by a 17 year old guy during eighth grade) were the worst bullies at school and made my life and others a living hell. I was grateful for the friends I did make, like Jenny Miguel, Lorraine Weil (who passed away from alcohol related problems before reaching her 45th birthday, miss you girl:( Liinda Samson, Paul Napolitano, Kevin Dalney, Mike Stephanic, Kevin Hazel, Trish Sampson, and Joey Vespole who passed away in his Florida home two years ago were good people and picked on frequently by so-called "popular crowds." These were the few who were real people and treated me with respect and kindness. No longer intimidated by the popular crowd of snobs, I hope to write about serious issues plaguing our nation's female gender, like bullying. I am currently a member of Phi Kappa Phi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars & the Golden Key International Honour Society. I am set to graduate in 2013. I then want to continue on for my Masters degree in both of my majors while lecturing at the University. I am scheduled to begin Honors English in the Fall of 2012. I miss having pizza parties, shooting pool in my family's basement, my old poster of David Lee Roth chained to a fence hanging above my bed, riding my horse Playboy on the trails around my home and the smell of fresh bailed hay.
