LaNita's Story

Life My Spouse While stationed at DLI in California, a friend of mine at Fort Ord introduced me to his new roommate, Bryant. Bry and I became friends. Three months after we met, we went out together (as friends) and had a great time. A month later, he gave me a ring for Christmas and we married less than a month later. That was 1990 and it has only gotten better with time. Update...my husband was killed in Iraq in the spring of 2006. Go to God in peace my Love. My Pets I have one chihuahua named Belly-Bud and a pomeranian named Foxie Jean. Contact Me- School I was one of those weird kids that loved going to school...still do! I'll be a college student for the rest of my life! My first big crush was Lee Martin (that would be F. Lee Martin, not Clarence Lee Martin). Wow! Those memories take me back to the many bowling alleys where I spent a lot of my time as a kid! The teacher that inspired me the most (and is still a very good friend) would be LTC Foster. It was in his JROTC class that I realized that I could go to college and I could go further than I ever dreamed possible! (Thank you Richard, for showing those doors of opportunity to me). Would I do it all again?? Not in this lifetime! I loved my years at Bassett High, but high school ends and life goes on! So for all the good, the bad, and the ugly, life lessons were learned and I gladly carry those memories close to my heart. Probably the happiest moments (as well as the most tense moments) were the times that we went against Martinsville in gymnastics. It was the one time we all pulled together as a team (bickering set aside), and won by the smallest of margins EVERY time! Erica sticking her vault, saluting the judges and then falling was as amazing to me then as Kerri Strugg doing the same at the 1996 Olympics! Another very happy moment was as a cheerleader at the Bassett/ Laurel Park football game in the fall of 1984. Noone expected much from us that year, but at LP's homecoming, we put the only blemish on LP's perfect season with a tie. No football team or cheerleading squad was ever so happy to get a win as we were that night with a tie!!! I will never forget the joy and excitement on Corin and Terrilan's face! Lots of really great memories and lots of great friends, which makes it so easy to forget those bad high school memories that are just that... a part of high school. OH!! Lots of love to all the friends I made at JROTC camps (Manuel, James, and Diego) ... I'd still go out that jump tower in a heartbeat!!! Can't forget all the fun we had at cheer camps!! Loved all the fun we had on the JROTC drill team!!! We were the hottest drill team at any of the meets!! We Rocked!! And a big shout out to the cross country team!! Thanks for letting me tag...Expand for more
along!! And finally, to all my closest friends, I wish you a life filled with love...Karen, Shelly, Steph, Melissa, Marvin, Terrilan, Sharon, MaryAnn, Lea, Sherry, Angie, Scott, Hubba, Tim, Tammy, Jenny, Smith, Kim, Corin, Calvin, Randy, Carol, Beth, Barbara and so many others!! Military I loved being in the army!!! I attended basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC in the cold and wet winter of 1988. It is here that I met my "sister" Amber and so many other wonderful women. From there, we went to The Defense Language School at The Presidio of Monterey. So many memories, so little space!! It is here, that I met my life-long friend Paige and my wonderful and gorgeous husband, (I Love YOU so much) Bryant. Unfortunately, it is also where I messed up my knee. After a year there, I graduated from the Russian Language School (Feb 89) and then it was time for job training in San Angelo, TX (Goodfellow AFB). Unfortunately, it was not to happen for me because after 10 months, I was medically discharged for my knee. But it was a 2-year BLAST with lots of memories and lots of friends. I want to give a shout out to my girls...Raz, Robo, Kat and MK... You Rock! (like an earthquake, 7.1 on the Richter scale!!) Joe and Tony, no bachlorette EVER had a better strip show (and I have the pics to prove it!). Aaron from down the hall, do you still watch NASCAR and do you still drool for Paula Abdul? Teresa, my roommate and maid of honor, hope life is treating you great! Hey Laaamburt!! I can use the computer now!! Rico Suave, you are far too dangerously sexy for the female species and a great friend too (who knew that was possible in a man)! And finally, DS Pullum here's a big box of popcorn to the best Drill SGT ever!! Even though I was on medical hold, I still looked forward to getting up every morning and going to work (even after midnight PT the night before!) My final stop was 3 hours at Ft. Hood, TX where I was medically discharged (Thank you Amber for getting me through that day). From there, I went back to California (across the Monterey Bay) to Ft. Ord. It was the beginning of my life as a military spouse. That 3 hours at Ft. Hood has been extended to almost 5 years (and counting). A year at Ft. Riley, KS, a couple tours of Korea, and a short stint with the Army Reserves(Bosnia), The Gulf War, Panama, the LA Riots, and, now, The Iraq War...what a long strange trip it has been! We are now looking forward to retirement in about 5 years. Looks like it will be in Texas, but NOT in Killeen! Update... my husband, SFC Bryant Herlem was killed in Iraq in the spring in 2006. Your death is but one dark moment in an otherwise beautiful, bright life. Thank you My Love for giving to me what so many never find in a lifetime. Go to God in peace.
