Larissa's Story
Life
I graduated in 1992 from SOU with a B.S. in Communication-Journalism. I met my wonderful husband, Dave, at SOU in 1991.
Dave (my husband since 1994) and I have owned several Medford businesses. I recently earned a Master's in Education (2015).
I enjoy doing crafts and collecting Hello Kitty -- you're never too old to have fun things! During the summer, I enjoy swimming with our daughter and keeping busy with community activities.
We adopted our daughter from China in 2006 when she was 11 months old. She's a blessing in our lives.
I also enjoy giving back to the community. I have worked for and volunteered for numerous non-profit organizations and look forward to giving more of my time and energy in the near future.
I work for the Medford School District as a Special Education Assistant, Substitute Teacher and Homebound Instructor.
School
Oh my, my biggest crush? I'm not telling! I dated way too much! For those of you who knew me, though, my first true love happened towards the end of senior year...
Anyway, I had a blast in band (yep, I was a "nerd" - but I don't care!) We had so much fun and laughed so much!
I also had 2 wonderful friends - Tina Grimes, who I'm still in touch with and Melissa (now Grace) Carter, who I'm also in touch with.
College
College was interesting. I worked my way through so that was extremely stressful. I'm still sick of Top Ramen! My first roommate was ...Expand for more
unique. She was a partier that had a bad rep. I was just trying to get my homework done, have friends and a boyfriend and get good grades (oh yeah, and working my way through).
I seemed to be one of the only ones in the dorm that worked, so it was frustrating. It got better when I moved into apartments with friends. I think I got more out of college since I had to work my way through, though. I already had a resume' when I graduated, unlike some others I know who had no work experience.
Workplace
My very first job was picking strawberries. I was too picky so they fired me because I was too slow! LOL Next was McDonald's - I worked there for several years in high school and college and learned a lot about how to work hard and hustle.
I've worked at several non-profits and a couple local newspapers in my professional career.
Over the past few years, though, I've co-owned several businesses with my husband. We sold one October 2005 and I bought my own March 2005. I loved it. The freedom associated with ownership is awesome! I had a home office, often toting our toddler around until she started school.
Recently, I've worked for the Medford School District as a substitute teacher and various classified (teacher assistant, special education assistant, etc.) positions. I'm currently on a job search for a full-time career position that will hopefully be my last job or workplace until retirement.
