Larry's Story
Life
After high school I went to Simon Fraser University for two years of kinesiology then I transferred over to the University of British Columbia where I graduated in 1981 with a physical education degree. In 1982 I did my one year teacher Training Program in elementary education, grade 4-7. At U.B.C. I played varsity football for the Thunderbirds on a scholarship for four years as an offensive guard/defensive end. After university graduation, I was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League and I had a tryout there as well as with the Montreal Concordes the next year. After being cut from both teams I retired from football to look for a teaching job. Since there were no jobs available then I moved on to being a boilermaker apprentice, since my dad was a boilermaker. Only expecting to be there a few years until teaching jobs became available, I recently retired after 30 years as a journeyman boilermaker rigger/fitter traveling all over the province repairing pulp mill boilers. The work is very seasonal with lots of overtime and every week we work is the equivalent of one month's wages. Since I only work approximately three months a year I went back to substitute teaching in Langley back in 1995. I do mostly high school physical education but I also do so...Expand for more
me elementary classes as well. I also renovate and build houses in my spare time and have lived in about 10 different houses in the last 20 years. We recently built our dream house in South Langley and have been busy finishing it off. I also design and make high-end custom furniture such as wall units, fireplaces, desks, bookshelves, etc in my home shop. My wife of 35 years, Judy (Lea), has retired from Air Canada/Canadian airlines after 37 years and we have flown all over the world on our free passes. My older son Christopher(35) is working as a 911 dispatcher and Steven (31) works at a meat company. Chris just moved into a new condo in Cloverdale and got married to Nita in Ma,2010. They now have two children, Kian and Jayden.. I still actively play pickleball and tennis and ride my 2003 red Goldwing..
My dad, Wally passed away in April 2009 after a long battle with cancer at 81 and mom died over 10 years ago. Brothers Dan and Dave are both well and can be found on classmates.com also.
email me at larryharbord(one word) at hot mail dot com (without spaces) I would love to hear from any old classmates especially from the states.
Since we moved around so much as kids I have listed all the schools I went to even if I did not graduate from there that year just so I could keep in touch!
