Larry's Story

College Following High School, I earned an Associates in Applied Science degree from Jamestown Community College. This was "the best of times, and it was the worst of times." It was the best because I met a lot of great people during those two years and had a lot of fun partying, etc. It was the worst of times because of all of the partying, particularly my second year, which had a pretty big impact on my grades. But...I did graduate when expected, and have some of my fondest memories of my life from those days. If I could do it all over again, I probably would only change my attitude towards my studies, and spend more time on them. i wouldn't change the friends and partying for anything though! Workplace Following college (JCC), I worked for a short while as a software developer for a small software company in Lakewood called Genesis II. It went belly-up almost exactly one year after I was laid off from that job. That was probably the best thing that could ever have happened to me though. Since there weren't many computer jobs in Jamestown at the time (or even now?), I was forced to look elsewhere for a job. I ended up in Buffalo, where I worked for seven years at a large computer contracting firm called Computer Task Group (CTG). Actually, I only really spent my last year doing software contracting there. The rest of the time I worked for a branch that converted other company's computer software from one computer language to another, and/or one database system to another. It was challenging work most of the time, and I learned ...Expand for more
quite a lot about my trade during those years. I left CTG in the fall of 1994, and have been working at Kaleida Health ever since. I've worked in multiple IS&T capacities during my time at Kaleida, but since 2000 I have been almost exclusively working as the senior web application developer. Although Kaleida has a public web presence, I have had very little to do with the development of those sites. I work primarily on our internal web site (KaleidaScope), and usually on the more complex web applications for internal departments such as Finance and HR, as well as some clinical departments. I am also a part-time Microsoft SQL Server database administrator for our team's web application databases. Although that only takes up a small amount of my weekly time, I've been doing this since 1995, so I have a pretty good grasp of how it's supposed to be done. Of course there are times that I don't like my job very much (don't we all have that issue?), but for the most part it is rewarding. We recently redesigned KaleidaScope (the internal corporate web site) to bring it more up to date. That was a pretty good challange, and the majority of responsibility on our team for the hard-core programming had fallen to me. It was about a three-quarter time project for me over the year that it took to complete, but maintenance and new features continue to be needed and added. It keeps me busy... As of the end of 2023, I've retired from Kaleida Health and the IT world. It's nice to now have my time for myself and not to have to report to someone else.
