Lawrence. (Larry)'s Story
When at Kelly, I was introverted and became a band geek. Music has always been my passion. I played Trombone at the time, and both Trombone & Congas with a group, along with other Kelly band members, called "The Uniques". We played a few dances at Kelly. Remember those dances where you had to fill out a questionnaire and a computer would recommend a match for you to meet at the dance? With the Kelly marching band, both Ed Pienta (sax) and I were responsible for getting the invitation to the Orange Bowl parade. Those were some days.
Due to not having enough time to practice I dropped the Trombone but have continued playing Latin Percussion. I was a studio and fre...Expand for more
elance percussionist. Played on some albums, commercials, and with several jobbing bands. My most memorable jobbing date was playing for "Princess Di" at the Field Museum in Chicago (May 1996). It was like no other job I had ever played, with the secret service doing their security checks and Hollywood and politicians in the audience. We opened, and Tony Bennet did a 1 1/2 hour set, and then we finished the event. It was a fund raiser for Aids research hosted by Northwestern University. That one job ignited the onslaught of many out of town gigs for the band.
Today I still play now and then and my passion continues by passing it on to the new and future musicians.
