Larry J's Story

Life 2005, I retired from my teaching position at The Ohio State University and moved to join my family in the greater Minneapolis area. Up until then, I pursued my love of theatre as Associate Professor of Theatre at the Mansfield Campus of The Ohio State University, teaching and directing, and directed the summer theatre productions for The Renaissance Theatre in downtown Mansfield and also for Richland Academy of Arts. I also served as Artistic Director for the Mansfield Playhouse (1976-1980). And I directed productions in the Columbus, Ohio, area for Gallery Players, Prairie Players, Curtain Players, Association of Community Theatres, and Ohio Dominican College, as well as productions in Wausau, Wisconsin, for UW-Marathon Center (where I taught for 3 years) and Wausau Community Theatre. In 2005, after directing some 125 major productions, I decided it was time to enjoy my family who had all moved to Chaska, MN, in the greater Minneapolis area. My oldest daughter Laura was with a consulting firm.. She is married to David Snodgrass, a web designer and computer guru. Their first child, Anna Rochelle Snodgrass, was born in 2003. Their second child, Alexander Reed Snodgrass, was born on my birthday in 2005. Their third child, Andrew Ryan Snodgrass, was born in 2009. My younger daughter Layne lives in Chaska, MN, and works as a waitress, and she has two children: Lanna (born in 2011) and Artemis (born 2016).. I totally enjoyed helping with child care for my five grandchildren. My wife Linda retired from being a Learning Disability Specialist at Eden Prairie High School in a southwest suburb of Minneapolis, but she continued working as a substitute teacher. She is also a retired Deacon in the United Methodist Church and also continued to be active with the Girl Scouts. My wife, myself, and my two daughters all enjoy performing, and some of our greatest memories are working together on the same theatre productions, such as OLIVER! and SOUTH PACIFIC. We have all also been involved in various arts in our church lives--theatre, dance, music, etc. I acted professionally in the Twin Cities area, performing in the '06, '07, '08, and '09 productions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL at the Guthrie Theatre, DEMOCRACY at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, FADING TO GREY for Diversity Productions which we performed at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City and the Mounds Theatre in St. Paul, the musical SUMMER OF '42 for Minneapolis Musical Theatre, ROBIN HOOD for Top Hat Theatre in the 2008 Minnesota F...Expand for more
ringe Festival, CALIGULA for Walking Shadow Theatre, and a production of ANGELS IN AMERICA. In March of 2008, I also returned to The Ohio State University at Mansfield where I was a guest artist for their production of the musical HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. From 2013 until 2019, I worked part-time as a Greeter/Emcee for Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, one of the most active dinner theatres in the nation since 1968. In Dec 2014 my grandson Alex and I performed Tiny Tim and Ebenezer Scrooge in Chaska Valley Family Theatre's production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL-THE MUSICAL. What fun to be on stage with my grandson and hold him on my shoulder at the end of the production as he shouted out "God bless us, every one!" And in Dec 2015 we performed In A CHISTMAS STORY--THE MUSICAL with the same group, I was the narrator Jean Shepherd and he was Ralphie's young brother Randy, Summer of 2016 Alex and I performed in THE MUSIC MAN with Faith Community Theatre (he was Winthrop and I was in the Barbershop Quartet). Dec 2016 we performed in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (I was Jacob), Mar-Apr 2017 in Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID (I was King Triton), and Nov-Dec 2017 in a musical version of the film IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, all again with Chaska Valley Family Theatre, and for these three shows, my granddaughter Anna joined us. For WONDERFUL LIFE, I was Clarence the Angel, Alex was Young George Bailey, Anna was an Angel & Townsperson, my wife Linda was Ma Bailey, and my son-in-law David was George's friend Sam Wainwright. In June 2018 we joined Faith Community Theatre again, this time doing Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Alex was the Baker, a Wolf, and the Pepper Shaker in the Castle, and I did Cogsworth with a 40-pound clock costume. Lots of Fun!! In August 2019, we moved back to Ohio to live in Sunbury, Ohio, just North of Columbus. Laura & David have built a house just north of the city of Sunbury on State Route 3 and we are all living together again--Linda and I, Laura & David and their three children. Layne and her two girls are still back in Chaska, MN. Alex & Anna have already been very active with theatre in the area.. In July 2022, Alex and I again performed together in a musical--this time OLIVER! with MTVarts in Mount Vernon, OH; he was Dodger and I was Mr. Brownlow. I have also taken up genealogy as a hobby and Linda continues to do substitute teaching in Sunbury, Delaware, Westerville, and Dublin, and we are both active with Church of the Messiah in Westerville.
