Larry's Story

Life Many of you who knew me at "Heights" will recall that I didn't graduate with the class of "67". I left Muskegon and finished high school in Los Angeles. I graduated George Washington Prep (Generals) in 1967. In my heart and in my soul I remain a "Tiger". Moving from Muskegon to Los Angeles in 1965 was among the greatest events of my young life. Since that time I have continued to travel and grow. I have have logged more than a two million air miles with United alone. I have lived abroad for extended periods in Germany,Switzerland and Morocco. My travels have included; South America, Africa, China, Australia, Central America, Middle East, and most of Europe. I have just returned (2/2/08) from a 10 day trip to Mumbai, India. What an amazing place. Last month (N0v. 08) I was invited to present a paper in Seoul, Korea. I had chance to visit the DMZ and other war related sites. Seoul is gigantic. May 2011 worked a project out in the Phillipines. I was housed during this trip on a coconut plantation in a WW2 ventage colonial house. I have lived in Michigan, California, CT and presently reside in Seattle, Washington. I am the founder of International Product Safety Consultants (1996), a firm that provides technical and scientific consulting services to the food and beverage processing industry. In 2002 IPSC established a joint venture with CSIRO of Australia. In 2007 IPSC entered into a joint business development venture with the National Center for Food Safety and Technoloy with the Illinois Institute of Technology. I am well read and reasonably well educated. I have written extensively with more than 100 papers published on food safety and food microbiology. I have recently contributed a chapter to Food Safety and Hygiene Handbook (Woodhead Press Ltd)published Oct. 2005, London. In Oct. 2007 I had a book chapter on methods for validating the effectiveness of Pulsed Electric Fields for use in food preservation published by Woodhead Publishing LTD-London. In 2010 I contributed three chapters to Ensuring Global Food Safety (Elsevier Press, London). I am co-author of a chapter 36 New Tool for Microbiological Risk Assessment and Process Validation on process validation in Nonthermal Processing Technologies for Food ( IFT Press 2011). Also in 2011 I collaborated with an international team in developing and publishing...Expand for more
a white paper on the use of Food Safety Objectives for the control of botulism in human food. I am a member of the editorial advisory board of Food Safety Magazine; President of the Food Science Advisory Board at Tuskegee Univerisity; member of NASA's External Advisory Committee for Deep Space Research. In June 2006 I was appointed Adjunct Professor of Food Science and Technology at Tuskegee University. I am a member of Institute of Food Technologist (IFT), American Society for Microbiology, and the International Association for Food Protection. I am the co-founder and Vice President (Nov. 2007) of GHI (Global Haromonization Initiative) an Austrian based organization founded to promote science-based food safety regulations globally. I am also past (2007)President of IFT's Nonthermal Processing Div. In 2009 I lead an international team of scientists in securing the first ever FDA acceptance of Pressure Assisted Thermal Sterilization (PATS) for use in preserving human foods. As a results of the work I was a member of the team that received the IFT innovation award in 2010. In 2013 I was nominated to membership of Phi Tau Sigma, the Honor Society for Food Science and Technology. I was also nominated (2013) to the Board of Directors for IFT. In July 2013 was was inducted Fellow of the IFT a peer award recognizing my contributions in advancing Food Science and Technology. In October 2014 I received the George Washington Carver Medal and also the George Washington Carver Vision and Leadership Award from Tuskegee University. June 23, 2015 FDA has accepted my petition allowing use of low temperature, high pressure sterilization of foods. This is a further advancement of the PATs process described above. Also this coming December 2015 my first book "Regulating the Safety of Traditional and Ethnic Foods, will publish (Elsevier Press, London). In October 2018 I was awarded a life time achievement award by the International Union of Food Science and Technology for my work in advancing food safety science and food microbiology. The award was presented in Mumbai where I also delivered a keynote address to the IUFoST Convention. I have two daughters, Sophia and Simone ages 20 and 16 respectively. Sophia is a junior at (Washington DC) George Mason University. I am a single parent. My loving wife passed on New Year's Day 2001.
