Larry's Story

Wow! Where has the time gone? My memories of NE are snapshots now of my life there, and like most of my time they dwell on the track, the pool and choir with Mrs. Claussen. I also have a lot of memories with Coach Wallin from electronics class, and throwing paper airplanes out the window of civics class. One individual that I remember very well is Coach Able, who ran us around the neighborhood in track and cross country. Good memories of the various track meets that I ran in, and all the fun I had being a member of the track teams during my school days there. I wish I could get a hamburger from the Dairy Way on Independence Blvd., and an Italian steak sandwich from Texas Toms, when they were still edible. I'd also like to thank some of the young ladies that I dated for a brief time in school, for putting up with me, and you all deserve a very big Thank You! Parking at Bunny Rabbit Hill. Gotta love it. Still on the green side of the grass! Now we're at that point in life where you have friends and memories that are dying every year. Still remember the American Royal parade that was held...Expand for more
in K.C., and manning the lines to keep the people back, while a Boy Scout. The downtown area being dressed up for Christmas, and sledding down the hill next to the museum when it snowed. Running like Indians through Cliff Drive and enjoying the Concourse Park casting pool in the Summer time, at night, when no one was around. Great way to cool down at night when you didn't have air conditioning! Who remembers swimming at Winnwood Lake? What a great neighborhood to grow up in . Another item that I've really missed over the years were the fried pork tenderloin sandwiches that I used to get at the Wagon Wheel, or it was the Chuck Wagon restaurant that was on Independence Ave., just down from Benton Blvd. I remember those sandwiches quite well. For some reason the cuisine in the Pacific NW seems to have misplaced that sandwich altogether. "Once a man, twice a child" is an old expression that my grandfather used to tell me. Now that I've taken his place, it just goes to remind me that you should always try to have some fun in life, and don't take yourself too seriously, especially as you get older.
