Larry's Story

School Since music was a large part of my life, school band was by far the most fun class, seems as though everything revolved around band and those special friends in the band, however, several of the jocks were buds also. Man, those band and football trips...were great. My gift was music and I managed to reach my goal of forming my own band, recording, touring, and being the founder of a rock group with several top national hits. The teacher that inspired me the most, even though I didn't realize it at the time was Mr. Z.B.Crump. He was so full of life, so wonderful, so inspirational. He was the perfect teacher. I wish I had the opportunity to tell him so today. Church was also a big part of our lives. When I wasn't at the Baptist Church, where we were members and half of my friends were, I hung at the Methodist Church where the other half of my friends were, and the Methodist Church had more parties than the Baptist Church. During my Junior and Senior years, I hung with the Freshman and Sophmores...because my relationship with a special girl two years younger. We had some great fun and I can still remember playing chicken (which was stupid) in my car (blue 54' Chevy) filled with guys like, Hatton, Slaydon, Hardy, Methner, Walker and others that I just can think of now. Do you guys remember our trips to Pt. Arthur...Man, we had fun. Bridge City may have been a dump of a town back then, but, I didn't think so then and I tell you, the innocent memories I have will never be forgotten. Those of you who were a part of my life...may God always bless you. College College was nothing short of a Fantastic Experience. It wasn't Harvard or Princeton, but I didn't know any better. Received a music scholarship from Lamar Tech and, through the persuading of Ronny Ricks at the last minute, decided to live on campus with Ronny...remember Ronny, Mr. BCHS. Ronny and I were good friends all through HS, but became even closer in college. We roomed together for 3 years. We registered late for on campus dorms, so the school put us in the dorm with all the football jocks...what a suprise, what a trip. We lived in Morris Hall, dorm C-312. Ronny did fine, I was the band guy, music major wimp with some of the roughest guys I've ever known. One of our suitemates, the biggest guy on the football team, picked me up on day with one hand and threw me across the room for making fun of his stuttering. Learned my lesson. One of the other guys was Vernon McManus...later became a serial killer!! Played in the ...Expand for more
college marching band, and the college jazz band. Had a great time on those college football trips. Gained nearly 50lbs my first semester...that rainbo bakery just across the street from the dorm was way too tempting. We'd buy butter by the stick, buy a loaf of bread, hot, fresh off the bakery line and proceed to play crazy 8 in our dorm, eat hot bread and get fat. College is where I came out...no not out of the closet...just out. I ran for cheerleader and WHOA!, to my surprise, I was elected and the hottest chic on campus,(Janie Nosek) who was also a cheerleader, dating the quaterback, wanted me to be her partner. Finally, I had arrived. Had more fun traveling around the country on Football trips. During that same time, I formed a rock band called the Sandpipers. We played a lot of teen dances throughout the BMT/PT Arthur area as well as Houston. Began recording in Houston, changed our name to The Clique, and had several hit records. Luckily I landed on scholastic probation, so I had time to devote all my time to the band and music. The next several years were absolutely great. Our band, The Clique, toured and played with some of the biggest names in the music world. We had a great time, but that whole world of sex and drugs coupled with rock and roll was too much for me. I resigned the music business in 1970 and got a full time job and never looked back on the music biz until about 10 years ago, when I began writing music and recording contemporary Christian. College is where I met my first wife. A nice girl from Houston introduced to me by Dorothy Kleinschmidt, another good friend and BC alumni. We were married and divorced 15 years later. In 2008,. my rock group, The Clique' was inducted into the Gulf Coast Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and in the following year, 2009, I was inducted into Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame in New York. In 2012, I received an Honorary Doctortate in Humane Letters from Lamar University. I have had a wonderful, intereseting and busy life. Life Is Good! Today, I am the Founder, Chairman and CEO of eCardio Diagnostics, a company that monitors heart arrhythmia patients world wide. My company was recently acquired by Merck (pharmaceutical company), rolled up into a few other companies, renamed "Preventice" and I was asked to remain as Chairman and CEO of this new Merck division for the next two years. Life certainly has been very very good to me. Today, I am divorced and living in Austin, on Lake Travis and also in The Woodlands, TX.
