Larry's Story

Life I went to high school in Kirkwood, Missouri through my junior year. My family moved to Northern California in 1966 and I graduated from Logan High in Union City, California. I then spent four years at the University of California at Berkeley getting a B.A. with plans to go to Boalt Law School. In the summers I worked at Lake Tahoe at various casino jobs. The winter after I graduated I decided to spend six months at Squaw Valley appeasing my new love of skiing that I picked up in Tahoe. The following spring I moved back to South Shore and found my way into the job of waiter at Harrah’s South Shore Room. As the old elephant circumciser said, “It was hard work, but the tips were huge.” Making what I thought was “big money” at the time, I made the mistake of deciding not to go back to Boalt. I spent seven years in Tahoe. During that time I also became a ski instructor at what was then Sierra Ski Ranch; working there part time so that I could ski for free. One day in one of my beginner classes I met my future wife, Marian. It was her first day on skis. When we married, she moved to Tahoe from the Monterey area and became a blackjack dealer. pen a restaurant. We ended up in San Diego and operated there for 10 years. During that time my son, Scott was born. He is now 20 and and lives in Ellensberg, Washington. Eventually tiring of the food industry grind, we sold the restaurants and I went back to school and earned an MBA at La Jolla University. Computers were just coming “in” and I became enthralled with them. After San Diego we moved to Folsom, California where I started a small computer consulting business. California’s constant need to regulate irritated us enough that we pulled up roots and moved the whole act to the state of Washington where I got involved with a fledgling computer company in Redmond (yeah, that one.) We eventually settled into a small town called Silverdale which is across Puget Sound from the hustle and bustle of Seattle (but only a 30 minute ferry ride away.) In 1999, with the money we had from the sale of the restaurants and our MS investments we decided to try early retirement. Marian and I love to travel, visiting friends in the various places we have lived. I still take on an occasional consulting job, but mostly now I just play computer games (like eTrade!) As Jerry put it oh so succinctly, “What a long strange trip it’s been!”
