Larry's Story

Military The high point of my 4 years in the United States Air Force was the year I spent at Thule Air Base in Greenland which is located 600 miles above the Arctic Circle. I was a weather observer and saw and documented a lot of amazing weather conditions that occured in the Arctic environment. During the Fall and Winter seasons the sun never rose above the horizon from the end of October to mid-February. se often to shop at the Base Exchange and Commisary. The Arctic wildlife was abundant around our base. Arctic Foxes were prolific on base and we used to smuggle hard boiled eggs out of the mess hall to feed them. Prior to Thule I did weather support in an Air Force detachment at Fort Rucker, Alabama for over two years. Fort Rucker is the facility where the majority of the Army Bell Huey Helicoter pilots received their training prior to being shipped to Viet-Nam I took my weather observer training at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois (90 miles south of Chicago) and did my basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas just outside of San Antonio.
