Larry's Story
Well now, I've been retired for almost a year now. Last day of paid work was Jan 4, 2008. Spent most of my working days in building materials retail. Worked about 27 years at one location in Corvallis Oregon. The job Starkey out as a small partnership in a venture to build and sell wholesale quantities of cedar and redwood picnic tables and prefaf deck modules. That business didn't ever amount to much, but led to a job with my partner's father's retail store.
The lumber yard was a decent business that grew resonably well until my former partner took it over from his father and ran it into the ground enough so that it had to be sold to another small retail chain out of Salem. The Salem outfit grew and took on more financing and took over some of the former Copeland Lumber Co. yards. Then that operation kind of went in the toilet somewhat as well. I never had any actual equity in either operation, but it was still a shock to be laid off. I had been "assitant manager" for so long
I thought I was a part of the place and former customers thought so too.
I next went to work for yet another building materials outfit. Willamette Graystone Inc (HQ'd in Eugene). It is a masonry and hardscapes manufacturing, wholesale and retail operation. I guess you could say I moved up to permanent building materials. I worked there from Sep 2001 until last January.

ss. I did manage to build a house in Corvallis with the help of some good contractor friends while I was with the lumber yard and have done some masonry projects relatively cheaply in the last few years.
Along the way, I met and married Susan Benesh from Medford and we have two children, Jeff and Katy. Jeff works in Hollywood in the TV industry and Katy is in Portland. She works for an insurance company and pursues her art and is a budding author.(something I long had thought about, but somehow never had the energy or disipline for).
Gardening and landscaping around our new house in Millersburg takes up a lot of my time these days and I'm planning to enter the OSU Extension Master Gardener program this Winter (if I get accepted).
I'm happy to say I spent forty to fifty hours volunteering with the Linn County Democrats and the Obama campaign earlier this summer and fall. President elect Obama faces a daunting task in trying to pull the country out of Iraq, out of recession and into the 21st century and the new era of a globalized economy and changing climate. I think he is up to it, but it will take a lot of cooperation and help. Maybe we've managed to show some progress in this country when a former redneck from Grant county votes for a black man from Chicago.
Creatively, I build fly rods and tie flys and do home projects and Susan is an accomplished quilter. Recreation typically involves fly fishing or golf.
That's all for now folks!!
