Latia's Story
Life
Well, after high school I went on to USC as a biology/premed major. During my second semester as a biology major I decided I didn't want to be a doctor any more and that I wanted to spend my career delivering babies as a midwife instead, so I changed my major to nursing in hopes of becoming a certified nurse-midwife one day. My junior year I ended up getting meningitis, spent a few days in the hospital, and then another 6 weeks in bed. I ended up taking off a semester to recover. During my 4th year at USC I found out I was pregnant. My son was born on August 19, 2003 after a very fast and easy labor. We had a home waterbirth with the help of two midwives. 3 weeks old and finished the semester. It was really hard though and after that I decided to come back home to San Diego to take a break from nursing and spend time with my son. USC closed their nursing program soon after, so I won't be able to go back, but my new goal is to become a homebirth midwife so I can help other women experience home and waterbirth like I did. I love being a mother and couldn't imagine life without him. Right now I'm a stay-at-home mom and I take care of another two year old girl full-time. I'm about to get certified as a labor doula (woman who helps a woman during labor and birth) and I will start my midwifery studies in 2006. My boyfriend and I have been together for three years and will be moving in together with our son when he starts law school in the fall.
