Laura's Story

Life Greetings to all of you whom my brothers and I grew up with. I pray this finds you well and happy. While browsing, it appears many of you are far away now. Like the boomerang I seem to be, I am recently back at the old McGuire homestead here in Abalone Cove. It hasn't changed much in the last 45 years. I don't know how long I'll stick around this time. Those of you who know me are probably quite certain that I left my common sense somewhere when I quit what you all thought was my quite cushy motel/property management job in Marina del Rey in 2001 to move clear across the country to reunite with the love of my life, after 17 years. Actually, the story really was quite romantic. The nerve of me to leave my daughter and my precious grandson (and my now son-in-law) to fend for themselves. As if I had any right to think, for even a minute, that it was all about me. It was so hard on them that for some odd reason they all moved to Las Vegas, and I'll be damned if 4 months later I had to swing by with the U-haul and pick their little butts up on my way back home. Now, those of you who know me also know of my great love of this big beautiful country we live in. I was a single woman, again, but I needed to get back out there. I also needed a job. What safer way could there be to travel about this country as a single woman and get paid for it than on 18 wheels? What an adventure!!! From the first day I picked up the Commercial Drivers License Handbook, to the day I graduated in the top 10% of my class at 43 years old and 115 lbs, to the day I finished detailing MY rig that I picked up out in North Carolina, to the day I caught the first snow while heading south out of Denver, CO, to the day I descended my first mountain with a full 80,000 lb load; I think it was between Albuquerque and Gallup, to the day I cried freely along with a room full of truck drivers in the Sparks, NV T&A Truck Stop while watchin...Expand for more
g scenes from 9/11, which was to be my last run, because after 9/11 I didn't feel very safe out there anymore, so I came home. Now, anyone who knows anything about me knows that my greatest earthly love, besides my grandson and my daughter is my love of God's creatures, and the more the merrier, right! Daycare Canine Handler is a great job for people like me. There's nothing like convincing 80 cage free dogs that you are the alpha dog. This job I loved with all my heart and it was by far one of the most rewarding times of my entire life. Unfortunately the owner, my boss, was a Vicadin addict, and I came to find out that these people can be pretty freaky, irrational time bombs. All the dogs hated her, and dogs are about the best judges of character I've ever met. Currently I work for the Department of Animal Care & Control. To back up a bit: 1976: Met Gary Boutilier. We were together for about 5 years and had a daughter, Jacqueline. 1981: Met Michael, the love of my life. Three years later I gave him an ultimatum he didn't take. 1986: While living in Big Bear I met my husband Scott Rose. We planned a life together, married in 1988 and bought our ranch in Oregon. 1994: I left Oregon and came home in time to spend about 2 weeks with my brother Denny before he died from brain cancer on May 9, at age 42. Then it was on to Bullhead City, AZ. I took over as manager of the Arizona Clearwater Hotel. 1996: My grandson Dillan was born. 1997: The hotel sold and I came home. You should all be getting the boomerang idea by now, and this is the short version! Took the management job in Marina del Rey, and most of the rest is where I started this tale. 1998: My brilliant, but very troubled husband died of alcoholism, at age 40. 2003: My daughter married. 2004: My brother Brian was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer and died on August 30, at age 43. I came on classmates to reconnect with friends!
