Laura's Story
Life
Hey all! After high school I made an attempt at college but decided to go to work instead. I married for the first time in '87 had a daughter soon after and divorced in '96. I began working as a truck driver about that time, and did so for 13 years until I got laid off yay! I met my current husband when worked for an aerospace company, and we have been together since '97 and married for the last six years. I lost my mother to cancer in 1995 and my brother Bill passed away in 1996 due to injuries he received from a motorcycle accident 10 years earlier. Those are my greatest pains. Now though I am not working, and I am a full-time student. I received an AA in social science in 2005, and I am working on my BA, totally online at CSU Chico. My kid is 19 now and graduated from high school, so I now have time to meet up with old friends and connect with some new.
My husband Mike was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood in early 2006. We have been together for 10 years married for 7. He went through chemotherapy in the summer of 2006 as well as a stem-cell transplant in November of 2006. As of May 2007 his treatments have been successful and will contribute to his quality of life. The survival rate for myeloma is only about 5 years and we are hoping that his treatments will give him an extra boost toward surviving well into the long term.
Update for 2008!! My daughter is 20 years old now if anyone is wondering about that, and sh...Expand for more
e still lives at home. She's a good kid, straight edge and yeah, into punk like mom was way back when LOL. My husband is still in a near complete remission form his blood cancer, multiple myeloma, but this year he did experience another health crisis. Mike had open heart quadruple bypass surgery in February with some complications that had him in the hospital longer than usual. It was touch and go for a while. He is however recovering at home and is going back to work the first week of June. I finally graduated with my bachelor's degree from Cal State Chico in May and as of now I am in a job search.
In April of 2010 I secured employment as a program coordinator for reentry employment services at an agency in Los Angeles County. I worked there until May 2013 loving every minute of it. As of May 2013 I will begin a new position with the reentry population.
My huband Michael is stable with his blood cancer and his heart diease is manageable. However, he was diagnosed with another type of cancer early in 2012. This cancer was very treatable and he is cancer free from it. My daughter is 25 now and working as an esthetician in Orange County..
In March 2015 my husband Michael died from his cancer multiple myeloma, For the last three years I've been adjusting to this new life. I'm employed in corrections and looking forward to being retired in the next few years. My daughter is 30 now. I am a cat lady and have had many over the years. Right now I have three.
