Laura's Story
Life
I live with 4 cats and am retired from teaching..
I enjoy watching television, reading, playing "Bookworm," and walking in nature. My only daughter is grown up and married.
College
I began college at the University of Michigan. However, I really wasn't prepared socially and emotionally for such a big school. It was an awesome time: Tom Hayden was editor of the Michigan Daily, I attended the first ever "teach-in" on the Viet Nam war. I ended up finishing a teaching degree at Central Michigan where I met my first husband Gordon Smith
My second degree is a MA-Ed. from Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. I also have a MA-TESOL from NAU. Getting my second master's degree was a lot of fun because during the summer I was finishing it, TESOL(the organization) h...Expand for more
ad an institute with students and lecturers from all over the world in Flagstaff. It was exciting to have classes from the experts and to discuss positions with international students.
Workplace
I have worked in education off and on since 1971, about 32 years in the classroom. I am an elementary ELL (English Language Learner) teacher now. Most of my career was as a classroom teacher in Whiteriver, AZ on an Apache Reservation.
Teaching is challenging and fulfilling. I feel blessed to have been able to work with our nation's future. I feel blessed to still have passion and idealism about my job. Regulations and paperwork are the downside.
I have been fortunate to have met many interesting, talented and inspirational people. Working with children is the best!
