Laura's Story
Life
We moved out West when I was 14 and my allergies changed so I was finally able to get a cat. His name was Bobby. Thankfully he lived until he was 16 years old.
Last year I adopted a 6 year old girl. I had always wanted to be a mom but my now ex husband didn't want kids and certainly wasn't interested in taking in someone else's child. Kristina and I have been together for 13 months now. It hasn't been the easiest thing I've ever done but there are days I know I've done a good thing.
Workplace
My first job was at the CNIB in Edmonton where I worked 1 on 1 with a nine year old blind girl. It was a fantastic learning experience. It changed the way I see the world we live in. have you ever tried to explain what clouds are like or what colour the sky is to someone who has never seen these things?? it's not as easy as one thinks.
After my disasterous year at U of A I went to work at Camp He Ho Ha (Health, Hope and Happiness) for handicapped persons. I went back for 4 summers. the campers were awesome. we had so much fun together. Some of them are still friends.
I went to work at the Robin Hood Association for the Handicapped in 1982-1984 and paid for my college while working weekends.
After I graduated I worked in Mayerthorpe, AB at the Junior/Senior High School as an interpreter/Assistant for a grade 7 deaf girl. I stayed for 2 years then the she transferred to Edmonton's school for the deaf.
I moved back to Sherwoo...Expand for more
d Park, AB and worked in an elementary school but learned I preferred the older students.
1987 I worked at Bosco Homes, a home for deliquents and emotionally disturbed teens. This was their last stop before jail. I stayed here for 2 years. I wasn't very assertive before working her but soon learned to be. Now nothing really surprises me anymore.
I left the education field and entered the business world in 1991. I was a customer service representative in an environmental lab. I really found the pace of the job exciting. I was able to work with computers, talk to the clients and learn alot about different samples and analysis. I stayed in the lab environment for 10 years.
Eventually I left the lab and did some temp work for a few months until I worked in a psychologist office as an office manager. I stayed there for 4 years. I enjoyed some of the psychologists but not all the duties I was expected to do.... doing my bosses personal finances it not something I'm comfortable doing.
In 2003 I went back to the Robin Hood Association and have discovered I really like my job. I've been in and out of the field for most of my work career and even though we aren't paid enough for what we do I'll stay.
For the past 18 years I have been coaching 5 pin bowling for Special Olympics. I've been to provincial games and last summer I was head coach for 30 members of Team Alberta. I always thought this was my passion but now I know that it is.
