Lauren's Story

In a nutshell, I live north of Boston and have been in the general area since my family moved here from Portland, Oregon via Princeton, NJ while I was in high school. I attended two elementary schools in Princeton, then we moved up to Belmont, MA for my fifth grade. We drove across the country in the summer of 1962 to Portland, where I went to sixth grade at the Llewellyn School, after which we moved nearer to Reed College where my dad was teaching and I went to the Duniway School for seventh and eighth grades. For the first semester of freshman year I went to Cleveland HS, then for the second semester we went back to Princeton and were supposed to return to Portland in June. However, there was a big change of plans (about which only my father was happy) and we came up to west of Boston where I spend three years at Acton-Boxborough Regional HS and graduated in 1969 near the top of my class. My freshman year in college was back in Portland at Reed, but I learned that you can't really go home again and, while I loved being back in Portland, it was really all the great people I knew in elementary and high school who had made it so special. I ended up transferring to Tufts University in Medford, MA. While I was there I spent my junior year abroad in London, UK, studying theatre, literature, and voice, and graduated with a degree in English. My career has been varied, working in television production, movie production (including being an extra), arts management, higher education, environmental consulting, wh...Expand for more
ile also being a semi-professional singer as well as an occasional voice coach. I sing with several groups and am the alto soloist in my Unitarian-Universalist church choir in historic Concord, MA. I have started playing the piano again, after one year of study at Reed, and love it. For over 15 years I was a Resident Artist at a gallery in Lowell, MA, where my media were designing and silk painting wearable art and painting landscapes in watercolors. For several years I taught silk painting at the Worcester (MA) Art Museum School. I have been happily married for over ten years. We just went to North Carolina for my husband's 50th high school reunion; yes, he's way older than I am! He has two daughters from a previous marriage so I now am Memee to two wonderful grandchildren who, at least for now, live 20 minutes from us and visit frequently, though not nearly enough. For those of you who remember my family: The oldest of my three brothers, Mark, is a professor at Reed College; my second brother, Paul, lives in central Massachusetts where he is a custom contractor; and my youngest brother, Guy, lives near Providence, RI, where he is a car salesman like you dream of. My father passed away in August 2012. My mother is still going strong and lives near Amherst, MA. On occasion she visits overnight and we catch up on Downton Abbey and Glee episodes. Naturally there is so much more, but it won't fit in the nutshell. I look forward to being back in touch with people and learning what you all have been up to.
