Lauren's Story

Life It's hard to believe our 20th reunion is coming up. It's been a long time since the days of Advanced Grammar and Grateful Dead. I still have an eclectic mix of interests, though some of the details have changed. I got married right after college graduation and lived in Frederick County, MD before fulfilling a lifelong goal by moving to a small horse farm in Taneytown. Ultimately the marriage dissolved and I moved on to Baltimore County, then Howard County, and finally Montgomery County where, thanks to the lessons learned during my practice marriage and nearly 10 years of being single, I'm now remarried and life is fabulous. I have an amazing husband (who will hopefully be at the reunion with me), two stepkids that live with us every other week, and a very large, noisy cat. My husband and I are both self-employed and working from home which allows lots of time to indulge in our interests. I still have a soft spot for Shakespeare and Jerry Garcia, but my grown-up obbies include fine wines, single-malt scotch, gourmet cooking, scuba diving, whitewater kayaking, attending concerts & comedy shows, travel (most recently Napa, Colorado, Belgium & the Netherlands - no, not on one trip!) and I'm a voracious reader (currently wading thru "Apetite for Life" and finished "Will in the World" before that, so I'm ready for some fluffy fiction next). So, that's the thumbnail version. You can get all the details at the reunion. School hmmm.... Nothing against Westminster HS, I think it was a great school and I got a lot out of it... but you couldn't PAY me enough to relive high school. I never had a college class as challenging and fulfilling as Mr. Gelsinger's class. I finally mastered m...Expand for more
ath in Mr. Olive's chemistry class. I came out of WHS with 3 dear friends - Melanie, Stacy and I are still best friends after all these years. We had a roaring good time last year celebrating 25 years of friendship. And Mr. Hendrickson, went from high school mentor to surrogate father. He met all my college boyfriends, attended my first wedding with his family, and was a cherished friend. I'm sorry that he never got to meet my current husband. I miss Karl very much. College life was much better. I really thrived on the small campus. At Hood all my classes were taught by full-professors, most of whom went by their first names. Having a personal connection with my professors was a huge help when it was time to find a job. I may not be "using" my Science education as a web designer, but the overall education and the sense of self-accomplishment definitely helped me get where I am now. College Hood College, Frederick, MD: BA Biology with unofficial minors in Chemistry and English, 1989. Tokoku Gakuin University, Sendai, Japan: Summer exchange program. Wow! What an amazing experience, Summer 1987. Hood College, Just couldn't get enough of a great school: MS Environmental Science, 1991. Workplace Spent some time productively using my degrees in Biology and Environmental Science working in the biotech industry and then in the water quality assurance for a local water department... And after lots of encouragement from my then-boyfriend, I quit my cushy government job with the pension plan to become a freelance website designer on Friday the 13th, October 2000... It's the best thing I've ever done. I love my job. I've got the ultimate commute and a great boss... Me! Military NA
