Lauren's Story

Hello! For the past 7 years and still going strong I’ve been a main bartender at your local Applebee’s. I’ve also been sober for 5 years. I know what you’re thinking… a sober bartender? Funny, I know. My interests include painting, journaling for therapy, music (my music taste in one word: Dysfunctional) and fooling around with makeup. Did I maintain an average grade throughout school? Nope. Was I in any sports? Haha. No. Any clubs? Nope. Did I run for class president, vice president, treasurer or take part in putting together dances, rallies and other school activities? Also, no. Took Guitar class, but never went to a concert. Never supported my friends that performed in the Talent Show. Didn’t go to Junior or Senior Prom. Never went to any high school parties. Although, I went to ONE football game my Freshman year. First day of school I was known as the girl wearing the leather jacket, wore giant Skullcandy headphones and carried my guitar around. I wouldn’t consider myself “popular”, but I’d say I was pretty well rounded. Never beefed with anyone or got myself caught up in unnecessary drama. I tried to stay mutual and remained friendly with everyone I came in contact with. Despite not having good grades and going all throughout my schooling years being undiagnosed with ADHD, I still had perfect attendance! Junior year I made my own decision to take my...Expand for more
self out of GHS and switched over to Advanced Path (which was still on GHS campus but connected to Mt. Madonna) I went in there with a below 2.0 grade point average and behind 180 credits. I intended on going back to GHS once I finally caught up, but decided to stay and keep myself away from distractions and even got held back. I spent a lot of time on GHS campus helping my uncle who worked with the special needs students. My Advanced Path teachers teamed up with the teachers working with the special needs and we would send a few students at a time who needed volunteer hours on GHS campus to help out the teachers. That’s when my Seed Into Sprouts non-profit organization came to be and my crew and I even received a High Five award from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce. I was proud to have made those connections with the kids and teachers. So much that I even went over my volunteer hours, as did the rest of my group, and got recognized during our graduation for it. Still to this day I see those kids and interact with them as Applebee’s allows the adult Ed students from GHS come helps us prep in the mornings to gain work experience before leaving at the age of 22. I’m always greeted by name, accompanied by smiles and hugs from both teachers and students 3 times a week. I hate waking up early for my shifts, but they honestly make it worth it for me every time.
