Lauren's Story

Life Well, I graduated Penn State in 2002 with a degree in Recreational Therapy. My parents relocated to NC in 2000, so after I graduated I moved there to be with them. For 3 1/2 years, I worked at a skilled nursing facility as Assistant Director of Activities; I also worked weekends at a behavioral health center and on an as-needed basis at the local hospital as a counselor for HIV/AIDS patients. I now have ONE JOB (yay) - I work full-time at the hospital as a case manager for HIV clients as well as for adult and child clients with disabilities. I met my husband Luke at church a few months after I moved to NC and we married in April 2005. (A match made in heaven!) We live out in the boonies, and yes - my Southern accent has come back. We are expecting our first child in September. Luke is going back to school part-time right now. He's hoping to establish a career in Forestry & Environmental Resource Mgmt. (He spent most of his childhood in the woods - hunting, of course.) We have two cats, Mitzi and Maizie, and two dogs, Roxie and a no-name puppy we call Block Head! He'll have a name soon. We're currently searching for a new home church, as we have recently left ours. I miss singing in the choir, so hopefully we'll find one soon! School School...I went to Cleveland High School in Cleveland, MS in 9th & 10th grades. My best friends were Magge, Cindy, Kandi and Jamie. We had so much fun - we were crazy! Who could forget the English corner? We were a bunch of loudmouths! My favorite teacher was Mrs. King (English) - she recognized my talent for writing and made me co-editor of the school newspaper in 10th grade. She was such a sweet and encouraging teacher. On the weekends a whole bunch of us would get together and ride up and down the "strip," from Burger King to the Sunflower parking lot. We'd go through "The Barn" to get Jafreezas - only later did we find out that it was frozen wine coolers. HA! We were SO wasted!! I still talk to Cindy and Kandi - they were both in my wedding - and have kept in pretty good touch with Magge through them, but only God knows what happened to Jamie... My junior and senior years were spent at Avon Grove High School in West Grove, PA. I had culture shock, so I really didn't know where I fit in, but I made friends regardless. I had lots of friends, but I'd have to say that my best fr...Expand for more
iends were Lisa, Ian and Brandon. I had the most fun with them. I will never forget Senior Cut Day at Lisa's - I'm sure a lot of people will never forget the black eye I got from it. And I loved my guys - we always had a blast. Dumpster diving...stealing traffic cones, signs & other people's garbage...turfing the entrance to my development...moltaves...grits...lovely Christmas presents... I always have to laugh when I remember Brandon's - and especially Keith's - antics in Mr. Shoch's math class. Or the time that Leia and I caught a certain someone doing a certain something in that same class (which he totally denied). I have wonderful memories of riding the bus with Richie, Justin, Steph and the rest of the crew. Especially the time Ian shot a potato gun at the side of the bus... I will never forget hanging out with Tiffany & Kelley, gettin' crazy. The back of English class with Nick, Brendan and Dave... Dang! There's just too much to remember! I guess I'll just stop there... College Freshman Year - I was supposed to go to Penn State Reading, but my mom forgot to send in the dorm fee. So I arranged to get in on an apt. with Tara & Erica in Altoona, then Nicole moved in, too. We were nuts! We hung out with Nick & Brendan all the time and had WAY too much fun. We were on the 3rd floor of the 200 bldg. at College Park Apts. We made friends with Pat & JR from the 2nd floor, then Travis, Somer and Jackie and other people from the 1st floor. We had friends in the 300 bldg, too, but I didn't hang out with them as much as the others did b/c I was going home a lot on the weekends before my parents moved to England. We had fun hanging out in the dungeon - Pepsi - listening to Outkast, Pink Floyd & Jimmy Buffett all the time. I learned to rap, Brendan told ghost stories, we wrote poems and played Rummy & Mancala!! I made a D in Pre-Calc my first semester (my first bad grade EVER) and then I flunked Calculus 2nd semester. Didn't see that one coming... Sophomore Year- Craziness in 'Toona Town. Junior Year - Craziness in State College. Senior Year - More craziness in State College. Super-Senior Year - Less craziness the first semester in State College, then I settled down when I was on my internship in Charleston, SC. I worked at the Psychiatric Hospital at MUSC, with mentally ill and/or addicted patients. It was a real eye opener!
