Laurence's Story
I still have my copy of the 1954 Clipper; if you'd like a copy of your photo I'll scan it & email it to you.
Military
I was in the Air Force from Feb. 1956 to Jan 1960. Was stationed at Pinecastle AFB when the name was changed to McCoy AFB. When I requested transfer to Thule AFB for one year I was transferred to Stansted AFB in England and then to Leicester AFB for the rest of my enlistment.
While at Stansted the base commander had to fly to Naples, Italy & asked if anybody wanted to go for the weekend. I got to see Pompeii before they restricted what the tourists could see.
Another time some of us were invited to go to Wiesbaden, Germany. I got lost in the city & thought my very poor college German would help. Not!
I took a paddle wheel steamer up the Rhine River from Wiesbaden to Koblenz and then a train back. During a stop at a small town along the way I looked up a hilly street and saw, from the back, a friend from High School, I called out to her, she did not turn around so I ran up the street; but, she ...Expand for more
turned a corner and disappeared. Was it her? Was it not?
I'll never know. We also went past the Lorelei, I didn't hear the siren song. Or maybe the girl in the small town was my unattainable siren.
While stationed at Leicester A.B. I was challenged to taste the difference between Coke & Pepsi. I was a Coke drinker so, blindfolded, I was able to taste the difference. That was in 1959 long before the advertising agency thought of it.
After 4 years in the Air Force. I had plans on becoming an engineering physicist; unfortunately, when I got to Analytic Geometry my brain turned
into mush.
1963 to 1969: I worked as a Math Aide helping design the orbits for the Gemini and Apollo projects.
I wound up as a portrait photographer for 18 years followed by selling promotional advertising products since 1988.
The smartest thing I ever did was joining the Air Force; because, I now can use the VA for medical care.
August 2010 No more hiking I've developed arthritis in my right hip & knee. Got a new hip in January 2011.
