Laurie's Story
Okay, enough with the Facebook trumped up version of my biography. Let's try a closer version of the truth, shall we?
Pre-voting age years: Dunsmore Elementary School, Clark Junior High School (La Crescenta, California)
Virginia Beach Junior High School, First Colonial High School, Matthews High School (Virginia Beach and Matthews, Virginia - yes, we were a bit like the Joads - all we were missing was the Dust Bowl)
Skip ahead - post-Bicentennial high school graduation: did anyone else feel like the morning after we found out 'who killed JR?' Really, who cares?
I returned to California, where I attended California State University, Northridge, studying for my degree in theatre (yes, I was on the road to fulfilling my senior prediction). Jump ahead 4 years......to:
My life as a grown up.
I started working for Disney right out of my BA program (talk about a dream job!). While I was there, they paid for my second BA in art and the first term of my MA degree. At that point they made all but about 450 people redundant....this was just before the contracts came in for Disneyland Paris. I continued with my MA and then did my Ph.D at UCLA (both in Theatre). I went to England for my dissertation research, made some contacts in the south of the country and was offered a teaching post the following year when I completed my degree (unfortunately, it was secondary school - ages 11 - 18). On that go round, I lived there for 11 years - the last 6 were teaching at one of the colleges of the University of London. I was offered my current post at William and Mary, and I have been here ever since. There have been many opportunities at the college for funding and travel; I have published 2 of my 3 books since I've been here. The next step is full professor next year.
I love to travel. Having lived in E...Expand for more
ngland for such a long period of time, I had many opportunities to travel to Europe, which was pretty great. Last spring (2013) I was invited to Taipei, Taiwan to be the keynote speaker for a symposium on the absurdist playwright, Jean Genet. I loved my time there, and started scheming my return. As it happened, there was a new Shakespeare Association formed over the summer, and trying to make a really long story a tiny bit shorter, my abstract was accepted and I was back in May, a few months ago, presenting on an aspect of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.
I should probably start bullet pointing things for ease in reading (and memory) - (in no particular order):
- I trained as a sign language interpreter as an undergraduate
- I am a member of the Stage Society of Directors and Choreographers â I direct professionally and academically
- I enjoy talking about politics at the appropriate time and place; just donât get me started on Margaret Thatcher
- I love what I do. Iâve been teaching ever since the second year into my doctoral program, and there is nothing like it. I have been in my current post for over 14 years, and I can still say I look forward to going to work â how many people can say that?
- One of my favorite plays of the English Renaissance is 'Doctor Faustus' by Christopher Marlowe
- I am a big fan of 'The Prince' by Machiavelli. Unfortunately, I think Margaret Thatcher was, as well. I think it was her bedtime reading material
- I buy my shoes in the childrenâs department
- I could watch 'Casablanca' every day and still get teary eyed at the end
This is probably more than I said throughout my entire high school career. 'To know oneself is to assert oneself.' Albert Camus said that. I said everything else. :-)
