Laurinda's Story

Life Doug Francis & I were married in Corpus Christi, Texas March 11, 2006. We had met at Berkeley High (I was lclass of Jan 61, he was June '61)& dated about 2 years, wrote to one another while in college (he was in Spokane, WA & I at San Francisco State--then we lost touch for 45 years). We reunited on Classmates.com & our romance grew through emails & his phione calls to me from Australia to Texas. We honeymooned in the US, visiting relatives in Texas & Virginia, then back to S.F. East Bay Area for two days before coming to Hobart, the capitol of Tasmania--where Doug had already lived for 20 years Yes, they really say "G'day," and the people in Tasie are firendly & warm. It's beautiful here, with wether much like the East Bay--but quite a bit colder. It's Winter now, and we will be visiting our family again in the U.S. in December. If you have a chance to come to Australia, do it!! Doug & I are very happy living in Hobart, the capitol of Tasmania, the Southernmost state in Australia. It is beautiful here--a river (the Derwent) surrounded by mountains. Lovely deep harbor, with little fishing boats that remind me of the Berkeley Marina--where Doug & I walked many times. We've been up to the top of Mt Wellingon (4,000 ft) and lately wet througfh the Fern Bower and to the Wishing Well--a really lovely walk. We are singing for two different church services---nine lessons & carols--(in Hobart and in Orford, an hour's drive across the Tasman Bridge) with Singers of Southern Tasmania--the combined choirs of Friewnds Singers and Spring Singers--we belong to the former. Looking forward to visiting relatives & friends for Christmas in the States. We greet you from Tasmania! I now am in Sing Australia, a goup located in capitol cities throughout the country.(We have various different color shirts, so it's like a rainbow when we're together. Our group meets on Wednesday afternoons in Kingston, about five miles from Hobart, where another group meets Monday nights. Doug & I are also singing in our church choir, St Peter"s Lutheran He's A Tenor & I'm singing alto--Im also an alto in Sing Australia & sing tenor for Friends Singers. We both love singing, as you see-- I'm still taking electronic (pian...Expand for more
o) keyboard, and May 17th we have our recital. I'm soon going to rehearse for the chorus of CATS, which will have 200 adults in the choir, several dancers, etc. Should be fun--it will be in October. We were back in the States for Christmas & New Year's. We visited Doug's father & two brothers & sisters in law & we also saw my sons, David & Douglas (& Dougklas wife Celeste, and grandkids Luke,6 & Crystal,4 months old) in North Carolina & Texas, a friend of Doug's in Pennsylvania, and my uncle in Oakland & two of our Berkeley High Friends (Judy Mazia & George Leavitt) in Berkeley. what a nice trip! We stopped at Sovereign Hill near Melbourne, a gold mining (rebuilt) town that was active in 1852--many oif those "diggers" had been in California for our 1849 rush. See ya! College At San Francisco State (it was College then, not yet Univ)I was in AFROTC Sorority, Angel Flight & sang with "Singing Cadets" We entertained at Shriner's Hopsital once & it was really hard to see those hurt kids, but they seemed to like our show, so maybe we cheered them up & that was good. Also was in Alpine Club & went on a great ski trip to Shasta. Now I know why they say "It hasta be Shasta" What a beautiful mountain & fabulous skiing. I got my BA in Humanities & received Departmental award--I was probably more surprised by that than you!!! I had a crush on my Freshman English professor, Mr. Clifford Josephson. He was also one of the ski instructors on a trip when our ski class(not club) went near Sierraville. The only time I ever got an "A" in P.E., mainly because it doesn't take great eyesight to ski!! Workplace I have a job! Am working for Chick fil A, doing "prep" which means, among other things, I make tea, lemonade, wash dishes. butter hamburger buns used for chicken sandwiches!!! I know God did provide the right job for me, because they aren';t open Sunday. The logo is a Holstein cow with a sign on his chest that says "Eat Mor Chikun". (Cow can't spell very well, but he/she sure makes great Chicken! Since I collect Holsteins in ceramics or stuffed variety, it seems more than fated to happpen. I am at home right here in Corpus Christi. Hope your Thanksgiving was a s nice as mine. Thank God for a job!
