Lawrence's Story

Life Life doesn't travel in a straight line, ne? After graduation from high school, I went to Jacksonville University in Florida to get my bachelor's degree and naval officer's commission. Then it was off to the Navy for 4 years. What I had thought was going to be my career faded quickly, and I decided to go back to school. That was also short-lived, but it put me in line to start working in the IT sector of business. I worked at an insurance company, and then Verizon Wireless (originally GTE Mobilnet) which I am still at. As for the Navy, I transferred to the reserves and drilled monthly for 10 years. I went to the Far East and the Persian Gulf (as well as San Diego and Norfolk). Then, in 2001 I was recalled to active duty and sent overseas. I returned to the reserves when I was deactivated. As of 1 Dec 2006, I have retired from the drilling reserves after 24 years of service (20 for retirement). When I left active duty the first time, I got into Japanese animation and from that Japanese culture. I've amassed a large collection of anime and manga in the following years. I also got into anthropomorphics ("furry") comics and culture. I still play trombone and euphonium, and have my rack of synthesizers to make music. That is, when I'm not listening to some type of jazz, rock, or classical music (or some combination thereof). School Biggest crush? hmm... wouldn't know who was the biggest, but Vi...Expand for more
rginia, Judy, Kim, and Renee were all special. Teachers? Good and bad all through school, but they all played a part in creating me. I don't think I'd do it over again. I proved what I needed to the first time, and there were too many bad times I wouldn't want to relive. College What was served in the cafeteria was never cuisine... Having my own office in the Physics department rocked. Working with lasers, cryogenics, and the observatory was a dream. Playing "Someday My Prince Will Come" in jazz band due to another person's horrible date and substituting the "Buckeye Battle Cry" for the JU fight song were my crowning achievements. Although the Dean of the College giving a tour to some folks, opening my office door, and seeing the centerfolds plastered on the wall comes very close. Workplace OK, if I could work in a physics lab or an observatory, I'd leave my job. But I get to play with the neatest computer gear (aka toys) and solve problems that no one else can figure out. The stress is high, but I need the stress to combat my low blood pressure. Military I feel like I've been on the long and winding road. For a kid in high school who was going to go on subs, didn't get selected for nuke power, got pigeon-holed on a frigate, went into the reserves, never got selected for billets, got recalled to active duty, but still did everything right and made it to the rank of commander, I can't complain.
