J Leanne's Story

LIfe: June 2023, George and I celebrated 48 years of marriage this past February. Our three children are Amy (45), George William (December 9, 1986-May 19, 2010 (28 when he transcended) and Jeffrey (36). My husband, George, and I worked together full time in his law practice for over 30 years. I was semi-retired from there until recently when our friend and his other legal assistant in our office was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. She retired the day she was diagnosed in August 2013 and passed away the following April. I spend most of my free time in the theater both on stage and directing. I have been performing in theater for over 50 years. I served on the Board of Directors for a local community theater for over 21 years, retiring from the Board in 2015. I performed as a soloist with the Symphony for the 18 years. I have performed at the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa, as well as several other regional venues. I guest directed at Valencia Community College in Orlando Florida as the musical director in 2007. George served on the Board of Directors for HPH-Hospice for over 30 years. He served on the Board in many capacities including Chairman of the Board. He also served on the HPH-Hospice Foundation Board for five years, the Hernando County Community Foundation Board and the Stage West Board of Directors. He underwent surgery for Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma in 2012 and was disease free until we discovered in August 2018 that the cancer had returned and spread to his liver. He is currently undergoing chemo therapy on a monthly basis and his last scan showed that the tumors had shrunk over 30%. This is great progress. He has since had three more occurrences that have required either surgery, ablation or radio-embolism to take care of the tumors. He is a fighting warrior! Our daughter was an Assistant State Attorney for seven years. In September 2009, she joined our private law practice. In October, 2010, she officially became a junior partner with her father and the law firm was renamed, Germann & Germann, P.A. She married her husband, Chris, on Nov. 26, 2016. Since our retirement January 1, 2021, she has taken over the practice although George is still a 20% owner. Our son, George William was a regional award winning actor/singer. He got married to a wonderful young woman named Connie, April 1, 2009. Tragically, in May 2010, George William passed away unexpectedly in his sleep from hypertensive heart disease. We all miss him desperately. But we know that his spirit is still with us as we can feel his presence every day. Jeffrey, our youngest, was working as a managing partner of our rental property company and has also been very active in theater. He is also an award winning performer and set designer. In December 2011, he got engaged and the wedding took place on September 16, 2012. They honeymooned in NYC where they got engaged and saw friends from home who have moved there and are performing on Broadway up there. They did eventually move to New York City and he loved it there very much. He worked as a Production Assistant on the TV show "Chopped" until his wife decided that she wanted to move back to Florida. So he uprooted his life for a second time and moved back home. He works for Gordon Food Services in management. Unfortunately, or fortunately, however you choose to look at it, he and his wife separated in September 2018 right after their 6th anniversary and are now divorced. After his divorce settled, he moved back to New York City and is now working for Cirque Du Soleil at the Astor Theatre working with Blue Man Group. He is loving life and his job once again. Over these past few years, I have been Director/Musical Director for the children's productions at our theater as well as performing in several productions. In November of 2008, I directed "Oliver". In the 2008-2009 season, I directed "The King and I" (March 2009). Some of my last roles were in the musical "Meshuggah Nuns" which is the fifth in a series of comedies about five Nuns. It was be the seventh time that I have played the role of Sister Robert Anne. For those of you who know me, me as a NUN is a real stretch although this particular nun was not your typical slap you on the wrist with a ruler nun. In 2010, I starred in the musical "...Expand for more
Anything Goes" in the role of Reno Sweeney for which I won a regional award for "Best Actress in a Musical". In March of 2012, I landed the role of Mrs. Paroo in "The Music Man". Some of you may remember that "The Music Man" was the show that we performed in during our senior year in high school. In the 2010-2011 theatrical season, I directed "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" (Sept. 2010). While directing this show, I was in a serious head on collision accident and was flown by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital with two broken bones in my left leg (tibia and fibula), a crushed right ankle, eight fractured ribs and two fractured vertebrae. After spending five days in the hospital and sixteen weeks in a wheelchair and on a walker, with the help of physical therapy and a lot of determination, I am now walking without any aids to assist me and even manage to dance a little when I have to on stage. Both my left leg and right ankle are loaded with titanium to hold them together. You can see a picture of the car in my photos to see how lucky I am to be alive today. God is good and watches over me daily with the assistance of my personal Guardian Angel, my son, George William. After having lived my life with no broken bones ever before, I got them all at once. During the Summer of 2011, I directed "The Rocky Horror Show" which our son, Jeffrey played the lead role, "Frank N. Furter". The show ran for nine nearly sold out performances including midnight performances, July 2011. In October, 2012, I was part of the ensemble for "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". In June 2012, I directed a Broadway Revue with a cast of 35 which was a great success. In January and February 2013, I was cast in Dolly Parton's 9 to 5, the Musical" at a Professional Regional theater in the role of Margaret, the office lush. Imagine, getting paid to be drunk and getting away with it.... HAAAAAA. . I am excited to be doing what I love and getting paid for it. In April 2013, I wrapped up directing my first non-musical, a comedy called "Love, Sex and the IRS" which I was fortunate to have performed in about 13 years ago in the role of Connie. .My play directorial debut opened and closed to sold out, standing room only crowds and great reviews. We even had to add a performance which was also sold out. A few of the plays that I have performed in recently were "Murder on the Nile" and Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" as Cecily Pigeon, "The Cemetery Club" as Lucille and "Love, Sex and the IRS" as Connie, and Sister Agnes in "The Incorruptible" in 2018. In the summer of 2013, I directed the children's production of "The Velveteen Rabbit" with 21 children aged 6 to 12 which opened in July 2013 and I directed "Forever Plaid" that opened in March 2014. We got wonderful reviews. In the 2013-2014 theatrical season, I performed in "Les Miserables" as Madame Thenardier and also held the leading role of "Miss Mona" in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." Two of my dream roles off my bucket list. I am directed 'HAIRSPRAY" in September which was the season opener for the 2014-2015 season and was cast in the role of SISTER ROBERT ANNE (for the eighth time) in the Nunsense Christmas Musical, "Nuncrackers" which will opened in December 2014. We had beautiful home on the water on a canal just 150 feet directly off the Gulf of Mexico which we sold in 2018. We loved to go kayaking in the nature preserve at the end of the canal. We loved the beautiful sunsets that we saw each evening. We loved the peace and quiet that our lives had there. But with age progressing and knees that aren't as nimble as the used to be, we decided to put the house on the market and move back into the house where we raised our kids which we bought back in a foreclosure sale in 2008 after having sold it in 2002. In 2021, George and I bought a small house in Evansville and have been spending time there in between his doctor appointments and medical procedures. We love the little house and have spent a winter and a summer there so far. We will travel back sometime in July and stay for a few months. I hope and pray that this finds each of you well and happy. Feel free to contact me anytime. You can find me on FB under my married name, Leanne Germann. Sincerest regards, Leanne
