Lech's Story

Life Arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax in Dec 1949 from DP camp in Germany. Took a three day train ride to Orillia, ON to join my father who had come Canada a year in advance. Entered grade 1 at Guardian Angel the following September knowing about 3 words of English. Moved to South Shore of Montreal in 1953. Went to St Mary's Elementary in Ville Jacques Cartier till 1957. Went to Loyola HS in NDG till 1961. Was in 643 Air Cadet Sqn at RCAF Stn St-Hubert 1958-1960, and the McGill U. URTP unit after that. Left the RCAF Reserve in 1967. Graduated from Loyola College with a B. Comm. in 1965. Worked in Montreal as an accountant and computer programmer until 1971 when I moved to Fredericton with wife and kids to work for the New Brunswick government. Moved to Calgary in 1979 after divorce where I worked in the oil industry as a computer systems consultant. Lived in Aix-en-Provence for one year in 1984/85. ...Expand for more
Got tired of working in 1999, and retired. Moved to Edmonon in January, 2004. Son lives in Vancouver, and daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons live in Edmonton. The now photo was taken in the fall of 2003. The then photo was taken around 1963 when I was in the RCAF. Update - Dec 2008. Still living in Edmonton, with the thought of relocating to the Vancouver area somewhere in the back of my mind. Update - May 2012. The move to Vancouver never happened, Been back in Calgary for three years now. Update - July 2023 Bought a house with my daughter in Edmonton. She and her SO live upstairs and I have a two bedroom suite in the basement. Looks like I'll be here for a while. I spent a couple of years living half time in Kitsilano in Vancouver. That experience taught me I didn't want to live in there full time. Too much rain. I'll go there to visit my son in July and August when the weather is decent.

Gen CC Ballou, again. I found the photos on the web. Ain't technology wonderful? The Ballou served for several more decades after our trip, and was eventually scrapped.
Gen CC Ballou. A US troopship. We came over to Halifax on it in December, 1949. The only reference I've run across it in a book was in the memoir of USAAF officer who served in the Pacific in WWII. He took the Ballou ho
