Lee's Story

Life After MHS I attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison and graduated with a BS in Philosophy. There are only two things you can do with a Philosophy major: teach or go to law school. I attended Wayne State University Law School in Detroit for one year before running out of money and interest in that field. So, I had to find away to support myself and applied for a job with the City of Detroit and was assigned to the Detroit Housing Commission. I languished there for 35 of the last forty years. I have been a Housing Manager ever since (except for a 6-year stint as Executive Director of the Muskegon Heights, Michigan Housing Commission). I retired on March 2, 2005. The top-level administrators, who were all Mayoral appointees, neither knew nor cared about the intricacies of Low Income Public Housing nor the residents. I got along fine with the tenants, but my bosses made my life miserable. I got married in 1972 and had a daughter, Jeannine, the same year. We were divorced in 1975. In 1981, I got married to Claudia and have been in love ever since. Before we got married, she told me to always remember two things: she is always right and everything is always my fault. This has made our marriage infinitely smoother; I don’t have to think up excuses for anything. I just have to say that I’m sorry and I’ll try to do better next time. We have one son, born in September, 1984. He moved into his own apartment with a roommate and is holding down a good job. His employers and supervisors speak highly of him and his work performance. In March 2002 Claudia came down with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and was in intensive care for 5 months (not expected to live). She did survive the most horrible experience you can imagine but was left totally paralyzed, blind, unable to eat and incoherent. Most of the time she was in excruciating pain that even morphine wouldn’t relieve. I’d visit her every day after work and sit next to her bed and listen to her scream i...Expand for more
n pain and pray to die for 2 or 3 hours. When she didn’t die, her doctor told her that she would never walk again. But she can walk now, quite well, wearing braces and is able to walk without braces if she has something to lean on, like me or a shopping cart. Her blindness was only temporary due to the paralysis of both sets of eye muscles. Recently, with the aid of braces, she has also been able to drive so well that she drives herself around town. We try to take daily one-mile walks for exercise and to strengthen her leg muscles in order to compensate for the permanent nerve damage. The “silver lining” to this horrific experience was that it brought us closer than we had ever been. That closeness continues to this day. My father was killed by a drunk driver in San Diego (where he was living with my mother) in 1982. My mother lived there until March 22, 2007 when she quietly passed away in a coma. She was not suffering from any illnesses or life threatening conditions; but, at 91 plus, her body was simply worn out. She had already slowed down from her previously active life by bouts with breast cancer, polymyalgia, a broken back and several strokes. My sister, Lynn, is a CPA, Yoga Master and a Deep Tissue Message Therapist in lower Manhattan. She specializes in focused therapy and has had several celebrities (such as Lou Reed and Bette Midler) among her clients. She has been to almost every country and continent; (Africa, India, Thailand, Peru and many others) to study under the world’s top Yoga masters, witch doctors, and medicine men. In closing I would like to wish all of you long, healthy happy lives. Love to everyone, Lee School I had a mad crush on one female student all the way through Lindner Place School and both Junior and Senior High Schools. She knows who she is.Think of the class room seating charts. I graduated with a B.S. Degree in 1967 and went on to a rather undistinguished career in Detroit Civil Service for 34 years.
