Lee's Story

Life Since graduation from Highline High my life has been rich with a variety of experiences.I've worked parking cars at Memorial Stadium Parking near Seattle Center for my late father who managed that lot;I've attended college at Olympic College, Western Washington State College in 1964 and 1965;Sadly, I did not do as well there as I would have liked, but life has gone on...I worked as the Asstant to the Chaplain at Swedish Hospitial in Seattle in 1970 and five years later I found where God wants me:doing live-in care giving for someone with a disabitlity. This year I celebrate that vocation by having worked with Norm Rogers, a 67 year old man with Cerebral Palsy for 19 years and stil counting! I am a member of University Presbyterian Church and truly enjoying and learning there of Christ. My health is good;however, I do have Prostate Cancer and am working to be cured of that;thankfully, it's been caught early and whichever treatment I choose, should take good care of this situation! The single life is rich and blessed with friends and blessings. This Summer I have been undergoing Radiation treatment for my Prostate Cancer;thankfully, the treatment has been successful! On January 3, 2009 I retired after 33 years of doing live-in-caregiving and moved into Ida Culver Retirement House. Here, I enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends and celebrating my 65th birthday with a party Ida Culver House graciously put on! The party was attended by family and many wonderful friends and was indeed a good begining to Retirment!I met new people at this Retirement Center and made good friends there, but I...Expand for more
soon realized that I am a "young 65" and not yet ready for the lifestyle there. In July I moved into the Malloy Apartments in the U-District and began working part-time fot Right at Home an agency that does in home care for seniors and people with disabilities.I am enjoying my new living quarters and the U-District very much. And thus far work is going well! Since much of the above was written some updating needs doing. And one correction: I moved into the Malloy Apartments in June of 2009, not July. My health is wonderful. All the lab numbers and my weight are excellent! And the daily workouts I'm doing at the YMCA in the U-District are helping me stay in good shape! I am active with University Presbyterian Church these days helping teach kids(3rd graders)with Sunday School lessons as well as helping students with English who have come to Seattle from other countries(mostly from China and and other Asian nations)with Global Friends. And as I have been doing for for about 3 years now, I 'm helping and mentoring and making good friends through UPC's Young Adults group called Convergence. For 22 years I was the live-in-caregiver to Norman Rogers, a 72 year old man with Cerebral Palsy. We where close friends for 23 years. On May 23rd of this year on his way home from the U-District after a delightful dinner with me, his wheelchair went into a ditch a block from his Adult Family Home. He died there. He sufficated from being on his chest and the wheelchair on top of him. The Memorial Service was held at Fairview Christian Church on June 5th and was truly a postive, uplifting celebration of his life!
