Eleanor Lee's Story

I remember being in 2nd grade in Jorden-Elbridge elementary school, then just called Elbridge Elementary. I had Mrs Hill. I was terrified of her. Rhinestones and pearls would drop like snow when she shook children who didn't print well. In 5th grade I transferred to OCS and then back (because of parent job) for 7th grade where I had Mr Sacket and Mrs. Wallace. Life at OCS I was the quiet one in the back of the room. I loved art and singing and that was why I rarely missed school even on the worst days. I wanted to fit in somewhere when I started at ocs in 5th grade but I never really seemed to. My first teacher was Miss Collins. I thought she was awesome. I had friends and none of us could be considered part of the "in crowd." Why is it that children and teenagers are so mean or indifferent to those they don't even know? Nothing has really changed. It is just as hard today for a new kid. I can't say I was any different than the others. I know exact;y who I snubbed for no other reason than that they were different than me. I want to say I'm sorry and that my life was worse for not knowing them. I wonder how it would be if we could have do overs at our present age. I will never forget Mr. Cook who had the cool head to merely pause in his lecture when I backhanded the boy who sat behing me in History. The boy had been poking me in the ribs until I could stand it no more. Mr Cook looked at me and the boy and said "I guess she had a good reason" and went right on with the lecture. I loved Mr Metcalf who I first had in 7th grade. The best was when he read to us. Imagine a teacher taking a few minutes out of any day to do that? Unheard of today. But he gave me a love of literature. Then there was Barbara Eveland. After a while you came to realize she was a terror to keep control. She was human however and that made her loveable. I learned that I actually liked English and words. And then there was Coach Gilbert who became principal. When he found out that my parents were moving to Florida and that I would have to miss graduation, he offere...Expand for more
d to have me stay at his home so I could attend. I declined but was overwhelmed by the offer. I hated PE!!! After high school, I moved to Florida and worked at the Ringling School of Art for a few years. I married in 1968 and two years later we became foster parents. We cared for 15 children over a period of 12 years. We often traveled with 8 children. We became the parents of one daughter . . I have been an Avon Representative for 20 years. There are so many things left to do that I am thinking of retirement. In our spare time, we love to fish, visit flea markets and auctions. On Sept 5, 2009 Our only daughter remarried for the second time. It was a pirate/princess renisance wedding and it was such a wonderful time with so many friends and family attending. She and her husband vend feastware at the fairs in Florida. His main job is as a chef at one of the Disney Resorts. Sept 24,2010 my husband of 42 years passed away suddenly. It was a cerebral hemorage and even though we live 5 minutes from hospital and paramedics, he was already.uncomunticative by the time the paramedics arrived. I have never wanted to be alone 24/7 and now I find the house terribly empty and quiet. We had a wonderful vacation in August 2010 for almost 3 weeks. So now I am trying to put order back in my life. I will probably move to be near my daughter who lives near Orlando. In the meantime, I am cleaning, sorting, cleaning and sorting though I would prefer to just sit and stare into space. I know my cup will runeth over again but for now, this moment it feels so empty. The only thing that sustaines me is my faith in God. May 2,2011 My situation has not changed much. I am adjusting pretty well. I am still with Avon. My art is always important to me. I would like to hear from the people I have lost touch with from my time in elementary as well as high school. I do have more time to spend on line than I use to. 1-1-2014 Have been in Orlando for over a year now and doing well. Art and Jewelry making keep me busy. All is well and would love to hear from all of you.
