Lee's Story

Life Let's see, where to start? After high school, I was off to college. I had about 12 majors along the way towards my undergrad degree. I ended up majoring in physics AND English. I minored in astronomy. While I was an undergrad I taught astronomy day and night labs for the university and worked as a research assistant at the observatory, which hooked me as an astronomer and as a teacher. After my 6 years of undergrad (I was having too much fun to be in a hurry!), I went on to grad school. I earned a masters degree in physics. My thesis topic involved measuring the ages and distances of star clusters.(Nerd) All through undergrad and grad school I stuck with music. I played sax and did vocals in a blues band as an undergrad, and started doing the folk music/open mic night thing in grad school. I still play the guitar and sing whenever I can. In 1998, I took a job when it lured me away from more graduate work in astronomy and oceanography. I accepted a teaching position at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts. LSMSA is a state-funded honors high school that draws 400 juniors and seniors from across the state to live in dorms and take classes like differential equations and astrophysics. I was the head of the science department for three years, in addition to being a prof. The staff and kids were great! I got married while I was at LSMSA, and we have two children: William Conor (born 2002), and Delaney Grace (born 2004). Cono...Expand for more
r, Delaney, and Julie have made my life better than I could have imagined. I left LSMSA in 2003 to go back to school. We moved out to west Texas, where my wife is from, and I went to Texas Tech to do a PhD in Physics, studying the structure and evolution of our Galaxy. I have observed at McDonald Observatory (Davis mountains of Texas), Kitt Peak National Observatory (near Tucson), and Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (near La Serena, Chile). It has been a blast. I graduated with my Ph.D. in physics from Texas Tech May 9th, 2008. We moved to Seguin, TX, and I started teaching there at Texas Lutheran University as a tenure-track professor of physics. In my spare time (what spare time?!) I play a lot of USTA league tennis, and golf when I can. I play guitar and sing, and try to keep up with my kids. Thanks for looking me up. Would love to hear from folks. Peace and clear skies. College Double majored in physics and English, with an astronomy minor as an undergrad at SFA. Started grad school at SMU before going back to SFA to get a MS degree in physics and astronomy. I then went to A&M and spent a year doing physics and oceanography graduate work before taking a job. I returned to grad school in 2003 to pursue a PhD in physics at Texas Tech. My dissertation focuses on streams of stars in the halo of our galaxy that formed when dwarf galaxies and star clusters were ripped apart through tidal gravitational actions. Graduated recently.
