Lee's Story

Sure is a long way from those simpler days at Aiken and yes I do remember them despite the haze and horror of the 60's. Not having the grades to get into college I went to NAM (Navy) right out of high school - we weren't rich enough to be sheltered in college. Was medically retired after 4 years due to a freak and serious flight deck accident aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Spent more than a year learning how to walk again. Came home in 1970 - student at University of Cincinnati 1970-1975, Bachelors of Urban Planning. Married Sandra Reifsnyder in 1973, she's from Alliance Ohio - we met at UC. Moved to Jacksonville Florida in 1976 and have lived here since. Worked for various departments of city government (Jax city HUD, the Planning Department and Transportation Planning Department). Along the way I picked up a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of North Florida (1986). Maybe halfway through a doctorate at the University of Florida if I ever get off my keister and do the thesis, a definite maybe, perhaps. Not bad for a retard that colleges spurned in 1965, isn't it? Am now retired (NAM injuries finally caught up with me), no children by choice after the horrors I encountered in Nam, and Sandy was in a class when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on student protesters on the quad of Kent State in early May of 1970 (she was cram a few CPA courses to avoid losing credit when she came to Jacksonville and transferred to the University of North Florida). llowed me into retirement from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. Now we plan more world traveling next on the agenda in a couple of summer months in Norway. Why? Because it's somewhere we haven't seen yet. And we are seriously looking into retiring to Adelaide South Australia. We were really taken by the place on our trip to OZ in 05. There that is just the barest bare bones of my history since we were at Aiken in those milkshake and sock hop days. I have a hard time thinking of them as nonfiction don't you? Looks like NAM split me from those days rather permanently. My life has been divided into 2 periods, before Nam and after Nam and I have rarely reached back across that gulf. I don't get back to Cincinnati much anymore. Used to be there about every 5 years for a mass family reunion but those have been moved to Dover Ohio (actually near where Sandy grew up). Haven't been in Cincy since the new century began (Damn, that is a strange thought, we lived to see a new century begin and think of the history and changes we've survived!). I doubt many would remember me, I was a real wallflower back then. So tell me, who ordered this damn old fart body for me and where can I return it? Just a short old note to let you know that some of your history is alive and well (sort of) and misplaced in Jacksonville Florida (more southeast Georgia than northeast Florida really). Y'all write ya hear. LEE SMITH (Just an old analog anarchist tossing barbed word bombs into this vast digital defile)
