Leigh's Story
After Grad in '64 worked the summer at the drive-in theatre (saw Good Neighbour Sam 23 times) and in Sept. moved to BC with parents. No grad ceremony for me, got my diploma in the mail. Have always missed that. Could have stayed but thought it was an adventure. My father was already in Vancouver and my mother stayed until the house sold. I drove across Canada by myself in a little Vauxhall Viva that was so loaded that there was only room for me in the driver's seat. Lived in North Vancouver and worked at Woodwards grocery store while taking the diesel engineering course at Vancouver Vocational Institute. Fisrt full time job was with Northland Navigation on the Northland Prince (search MS Northland Prince and MS St Helena IMO 5257634) on the BC coast between Vancouver and Stewart BC. During this time I met Rosanne (her fiance introduced us) and we married 6 months later. This year we celebrated our 50th. 2 sons and 2 grandsons. I left the sailor's life just before our wedding and went work for Westcoast Transmission a natural gas pipeline at various locations in BC. Earned an Interprovincial Millwright ticket, a 4th class Stea...Expand for more
m Engineering ticket and eventually specialized in vibration analysis. Some where in there I tried self employment and lived in Midland Ont. from 1974 to 1977. That didn't work out so returned to the pipeline. Took optional early retirement in 2003 at 57 due to downsizing. Moved to Mission in 2007 to be closer to our sons and help with my 98 year old mother who lived to 101. In 2007 we sold our house and moved to a ""life Lease" apartment. Major downsizing, still trying to get rid of unneccessary "stuff". No more grass cutting, garden weeding, house maintenance, etc. Now have time to indulge interests of reading and travel (especially cursing). Reverting back to my repressed sailor mode. I guess it's the salt water in my veins. my great grand father, grandfather and father were boat builders and I became a sailor. My oldest son is a robotics technician and has just landed a huge contract for his employer to supply electrical and electronic equipment for the new Coast Guard vessels being built in North Vancouver and is now claiming 5th generation boat builder status.
Hope all of you are well. Would love to hear from anyone.
