Len's Story
Life
I came from Grand Falls. My parents are Jim and Marie
and my sisters name is Debbie "GREB" another Alumni.
I graduated from G.F.A. 1980 and have many years of
education. Almost 10 years trying to figure out how I get into movies. Back in 1977 my buddies and I went to Star Wars and the match was lit. Pete S. and Dave F and I grew up building models and drawing comics. Well I wanted to do it for a living. Almost made it to ILM but found that it was more of a factory by the time I was looking for work so I went in the direction of Feature animation. And it's been fun. I've worked in Toronto, Ireland, London UK, and California and have traveled a lot.
Well that was my Work life. During all this most of my
free time was spent scuba diving anywhere I could. Growing up swimming every day at Leech Brook in the summer and looking for lost coins gave me a want to go deeper. I
went back home every year to search Nfld for ship
wrecks and found it is the best scuba diving in the world
for wrecks but very very cold. I have dived in what is
considered the best places in the world but I prefer
Nfld. I still go back to the brook and look for coins and stuff. I have met most of my friend through this sport and having them responsible for your life and you theirs makes for a great friendship.
After a long relationship that didn't work I got back in contact with Tracey Constable from High School. We have been friends for 28 years and now are engaged. Finally went past that friendship barrier.
One of our big hobbies is Halloween. If I couldn't do
live action effects in movies I'd start doing it for
Halloween. We have a big work shop and a massive
amount of props that I make or find around Hollywood.
The parties takes us 2 months to set up for one party.
It's a blast and fun to do it for the 100-200 people
who come. Oh, in 93 I went with a friend to Nepal and we hiked up to
see Mt. Everest. Wow. We didn't climb it but climbed
next to it. 18,000+ feet. Hardest thing I ever did but
it was great. I think the highest point in Nfld is
around 4000ft.
I was also one of the original members of the Nfld
Club of California and was the President.
Now I just keep up the members list because of work.
College
I graduated from G.F.A. 1980 and have had many years of
education since, including one year of commercial art at
Trades and Tech, 81-82, two years of Visual arts at
BSGCC, 1982-84. I was a photographer in Kingston,
Ontario for one year, then attended Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design, 1985-86 for my BFA. During
my time there, I became interested in animation which
led me to Sheridan College,86-89 in Ontario where I
did a full time animation course. I did three years of
animation there, including one summer of computer
animation. Now it's learning on the job. I like getting paid for learning better.

My first job was making commercials in Toronto for a few months. I helped create the Oreo Dome commercial for the new Stadium in TO. It got a standing ovation on the night it played on the big screen. In my spare time I learned scuba diving, the one thing I always wanted to do. Always thought about doing that as a job.
Towards the end of the summer 89 I was called to go to
Dublin to work for Don Bluth animation studios, where
I started my career in effects animation. I was hoping
to get into live action effects but a movies a movie. I
couldn't pass up being flown to Ireland and working on
a movie, even if it was only animation. I was there
for almost 2 years when a friend called for me to work
with Stephen Spielberg's Ambilmation in London UK. I
was there for several years working and diving until
they transfered the studio to Hollywood to be closer to
Steve S. Within months we became DreamWorks. I stayed
with them for four years before heading off to other
studios. I have been back and forth to DW but the
industry dropped the drawn animation and most lost
their jobs towards the end of the 90s. Through out the
2000s the industry has struggled to get back on top with
computers. This has taken five years to come around. I
was one of the lucky ones to get through it and
continued to work and move into this basicly new
industry.
Here are the movies I worked on. If you have kids then you have seen them.
Bluth studios, Ireland: Rock a Doodle, Troll in
Central Park
Amblimation,Uk: We're Back, Balto
DreamWorks: Prince of Egypt, Eldorado, Spirit
Warner Brothers: Osmosis Jones, Looney Tunes Back in
Action
Klasky Csupo: The Thornberries Movie, Rug Rats Go
Wild, this was my change into Computers.
Omation: The Barn Yard, full CG movie, The Seeker, Alien Vs Predator 2, several commersials and the Simpsons Ride at Universal studios.
I guess Disney will be next.
Update. Ya Disney, ya NO. Gee when did I write this. So since 2003 animation in LA has been awful for getting work. Mostly Age discrimination and outsourcing. I have struggled but have worked in a few things but as of 2014 I have been going toward Previs, which is like a digital story board. We make the film before it is shot. I worked a couple of months on The Avengers 2. Over the years I have set up a Editing company, set up a company called Cobra Tactical (sold body armor and weapons) weird, Now other then film I'm helping to set up a Scuba shop called Scubatude.
Home life. I married my High school crush Tracey Constable. We've been best Buddies for 30 years and crossed that line. We bought a wonderful big foreclosure in Acton CA. 6 Acres surrounded by mountains, Movie ranches and lions and tigers. You will have to request to be friends on FB to see all that.
Still heading back to the Rock and working on the cabin in Point of Bay.
