Leo's Story

Life Ok, what to write... I'm still an artist and make my living in the arts. I lived in New Haven for years after attending college there. I used to come home to play on weekends and met my wife on one of those weekends. After we married, we bought a house in Monson and live there with our 16 year old daughter. I don't paint as often as I probably should but try to get a few portraits a year done. I have more ideas than time to paint, but time seems to be in short supply for everyone nowadays.. School After High School, I went to Paier School of Art. That was a very cool experience. I was with a bunch of people who had a the same common interests that I did. It turned out to be much more difficult than I had thought. I had recieved so much recognition on the high school level that I guess I thought that would just carry over to college. Turns out that everyone there was the class artist. Once I got accustomed to my new place, I pushed hard to get back to the top. I don't think I ever really did, but I held my own pretty well. After school, I accepted a 2 year extended study scholarship for Tech Illustration and that was what got me into corporate life. Now I paint and draw as the opportunity affords but am much more involved in the business side of promoting products and brands. Work I got involved in a corporate art department for a Medical Instrumentation company back in 1980, a company called Corometrics Medical Systems. It was a pretty cool job with lots of opportunity for advancement. I worked there for 18 years moving up from Techn...Expand for more
ical Illustrator to Director of Marketing Services. After the company was purchased my GE, I decided it was time to move on and found a job running the Art Program for Yankee Candle, but that turned out to be a terrible fit for me. I guess I just spent too much time in the Medical Field to really fit into a consumer product like that. I left that job after a year and freelanced for a couple of years before accepting another position with Hitachi Aloka Medical. I'm the Marketing Services Manager there, responsible for all corporate communications. My job involves some design and art skills, but more I find myself relying on my years of experience in marketing advanced medical technologies to high level physicians. The cool part of the job is that I get to travel quite extensively to Europe and Japan as well as all over the United States. Other About 10 years ago, I got involved in kayaking and decided to build my own. It was sort of combining my art talents with some woodworking skills I'd developed over the years. Currently, I have 2 boats that I'm built, one is a wood strip sea kayak that almost 20 feet long. The other is a skinboat designed for hunting seals in the old days. I spend quite a lot of time out on them. I'm currently restoring a 1943 old town canoe, but that's taking a back seat to a piece of furniture that I'm designing for our kitchen for my wife. I suppose that working with wood has kind of become my new painting for the time being. Although that said, I'm starting to feel the inch to push paint around a little bit again too.
